Robert's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Picking. Born on December 27, 1936, Robert had a life well-lived and filled with love, until his final day on December 20, 2023.
Robert leaves behind a loving family: his devoted wife, Barbara Jean Picking, whom he married in 1960; his children, Timothy Picking, Bob Picking (Robert Wayne Picking), Sarah McNelly, Johnny Picking and Jennifer Freeman; and his cherished grandchildren, William, CJ, Robby, Jeffrey, Aidan, Oliver, Melissa, and Stephanie. He is now reunited with his predeceased family members: His son Mike Picking, his brothers William, Lloyd, Jonathon, Reuben, and Tommy, his sister Mary, and his parents Mary and Elton Ray Picking.
Robert showed his love of his country by serving in the United States Air Force starting in 1955. He was also a dedicated giver to Boy's Town, a charity dedicated to the well-being of children (and whom took care of his brother Lloyd for many years), reflecting his nurturing and caregiving nature.
For many years Robert was the warehouse manager of Horton's Furniture in Santa Ana, CA. After moving to Sacramento CA in 1979 from Anaheim CA he then went to work for Beck's Furniture where he was the warehouse manager. His final position was for JC Parts in Sacramento CA. He retired in 2001.
Robert was an admirer of simplicity in life, evident in his favorite foods - chili size, hamburger soup, deviled eggs, salami, and shrimp, and his fondness for Orange Juice and Milk. He found comfort in the tunes of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, and The Ventures, and always enjoyed a good John Wayne movie or a round of Slot machines or video poker. Everyone who knew Robert will remember him in his element: watching The Grand Ole Opry, Laugh In, Hee Haw, or Larry's Country Diner, or cheering for the San Francisco 49ers.
His greatest joys were his simple yet fulfilling recreational activities: going to the auction, visiting garage sales, and spending time with his beloved dogs. Robert's extraordinary work ethic was an inspiration to all, and his legacy of family loyalty leaves an imprint on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Despite his hard exterior, Robert had a dry sense of humor and was a known jokester and prankster amongst his loved ones.
His legacy is one of a hardworking man, often working seven days a week. He always took care of others and loved all of his kids and dogs. He leaves behind a legacy of family loyalty and will be dearly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and of course, his dogs.
A Memorial service to celebrate Robert's life will be held on January 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Jesus Name Lighthouse in Citrus Heights. A celebration of life will be held at his home at 1 PM on January 27, 2024. We invite you to share stories of dad, things that he loved and simply remember the life that he had that reached every one of us in one way or another . As we remember and honor his life, may his spirit continue to inspire us, and his laughter remain with us forever.
