Robert's obituary
Robert John Catapano passed away peacefully on February 28th surrounded by his four beloved children. He was born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Rose and James Catapano on November 24, 1940. Affectionately known as Bobby to many, he was revered for his warmth, sentimentality, generosity and adoration for his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his second wife, Phyllis. He is survived by many loved ones, including his children Gina Jacobs, Dana (Gerald) Cavallo, Carla Padella (Christopher Martin), and Daniel Catapano (Laura Richardson) and his cherished grandchildren—Dakota, Dylan, Cassandra, Julianna, Marcus and Dante. Robert is also survived by his younger sister, Susanne Patruska and her husband, David, as well as his two nephews, Stephen (Heather) and Jeffrey. He adored his precious cousin, Rosalyn Roberts, and his beloved canine companion, Daisy.
Robert's unparalleled love for his family was one of his defining traits. Even in his final days, his concern for his children was placed above his own needs. As a young man, Robert considered a career in the military but ultimately decided to serve in the Army Reserves so he could marry Gynine (Centalonza) Bekech and start a family. He was also known for his quick wit, strong will, and goofy jokes that he loved to share with all. Robert also had an infectious laugh and plenty of advice to offer whether you wanted it or not. He taught his children many life lessons and typically liked to have the last word.
Robert graduated with a BS from Bloomfield College and went on to become a career accountant with great financial insight and business savvy. He eventually retired to Florida for many years before returning to the Northeast to be closer to family and seek treatment for his illness. The family thanks Smilow Cancer Center for all the wonderful care he received, with extra special gratitude for Grace Walters, who truly went above and beyond.
A celebration of life is planned for April 21st at Riverview Bistro in Stratford, Connecticut, starting at 3:00pm. All are welcome to join the family.
Robert's ashes will be interred at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ on April 22nd at 1:00.
