Robert's obituary
Robert “Bob” Symons Huddy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and esteemed member of law enforcement, passed away peacefully at home in Texas on January 21, 2024.
Bob was born May 24, 1929 in Flint, Michigan to Edward Henry Huddy and Doris Ann (Symons) Huddy, joining two older siblings, Lillian B (Huddy) Johnson and C Floyd Huddy, all who preceded him in death.
Bob married Wanda Jo (Crunk) Huddy on February 28, 1948, and enlisted as a Michigan State Police (MSP) Trooper on December 5, 1955. Bob and Wanda raised their children, Sandra Jo (Huddy) Lane, Patricia Ann Huddy, and Michael Dean Huddy at MSP posts across the state. During his time with the MSP he graduated from the FBI National Academy and retired on March 27, 1982 from the Fire Marshal Division with the rank of Detective Lieutenant.
Bob and Wanda retired to their lakeside cottage on Douglas Drive in Tawas City, Michigan in the early 1980s. Upon retirement, Bob maintained connections with his MSP colleagues, community leaders, and friends through daily coffee gatherings, golf leagues, and card clubs. He also remained committed to community service, including membership with the Scottish Rite Freemasons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and was elected 33° Master Mason for outstanding and selfless work performed in the Scottish Rite and public life. He was a Board Member of the AuSable Valley Community Mental Health Authority, an Alabaster Township Supervisor, and member of the Tawas Area Elks Lodge.
During his retirement in Tawas City, Bob and Wanda were instrumental and ever present in the life of his granddaughter, Kelsea, and her parents, Sandra and David Lane. Living just down the street, you would often find them with Kelsea before or after primary school, at her sporting events, and at Sunday family dinners. He enjoyed spending time with their dogs, and in recent years was particularly close with Maggie and Molly, their chorkie and maltipoo. Bob and Wanda also enjoyed frequent visits and calls with their daughter, Patricia, and were exceptionally proud of her community service and wildlife rehabilitation work. They closely followed Michael’s business ventures, relishing his entrepreneurial spirit and professional accomplishments, and enthusiastically supported Michael and Paula’s children, Travis and Tracy, as they proceeded through school, sports, and careers. They would often travel south in the winter to spend time with Wanda’s siblings and the Carlson family in Galveston, Texas, and moved permanently to the Galveston area in 2016.
He will be missed.
