Robert's obituary
Robert Joseph Guidry, 67 (barely), of Nashville, TN would be so annoyed that you’re reading this on the internet right now.
Rob Guidry was not afraid of death (he didn’t, in fact, appear to be afraid of anything at all) and he approached the end of his life with the same analytical philosophy and dark humor with which he dealt with every other part of life- showing off his MRI images and peppering the radiologist with questions about how exactly the contrast agent worked.
Rob was a scientist at heart, a geologist by trade, and a musician in his soul. He could pick up any instrument and play a recognizable Beatles song on it, but the drum set was his weapon of choice and he was, according to his brother Gary, the best damn drummer since Ringo Starr. He felt so fortunate to have had the opportunity to play some great music with some amazing musicians and bands over the years, including Babs and Pyramid (with his sister Babs), Hal Newman and the Mystics of Time, San Rafael Band, Tennessee Jed, The Hubcats, The Drifters, Sam Moore, and let us not forget the time Tommy Tutone played 867-5309 in our basement. Over and over.
If that weren’t enough, he could explain the stratigraphy of the rock cuts along I-40 or describe the formation process of the Grand Canyon in great detail AND actually make it fascinating. His kids never needed the internet for science or math homework questions because there never seemed to be a subject he didn’t already know everything about.
Rob is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 50 years, Mary Ficklin Guidry. He leaves his sons, Adam and Winston (Nicole), and his daughters Paige and Hannah (Spencer Johnson)- all four of whom are proficient at his special brand of imparting wisdom at great length and with much repetition and would be happy to share those skills with you. His grandchildren: Nora, Davis, Cypress, June, Rex, Josephine, and Macsen, will perhaps miss him more than anyone else. Pop Pop was, after all, the title he was most proud of.
He is preceeded in death by his parents Davis and Eudie Guidry, sister Pat Decuire, and brothers David, Jimmy, and Gary Guidry. His brother Danny Guidry and sisters Barbara Guidry Wilson, Jane LeBlanc, Martha Chapman, and Donna Cannon remain to tell all the best stories about him. I won’t even try to list the host of nieces and nephews who knew him as Uncle Robby.
Rob hated funerals and didn’t want one. In fact, he said that anyone who tried to plan one could kiss his dead ass, but that it would be cool if people wanted to get together, play some music, and have a drink. For anyone who is interested in joining us, we will be announcing plans to do just that very soon- both in Nashville and in Louisiana.
