Robert's obituary
Robert Allen Fitzhugh, of Waikoloa, Hawaii, born August 28, 1930, died on March 2, 2006.
Robert was retired from his career as a Senior Auditor for the Office of the Inspector General Western Region, US Department of Interior, a position he held for many decades, and which took him to considerable distances as he marshaled Federal land programs in virtually every National Park in the United States, as well as communities in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam.
He enjoyed and excelled at a secondary career as the owner of the Waikoloa Village Frame Shop, a business he opened, after training himself to a level of considerable skill, to mat, frame and present his wife's beautiful works of art. So popular was his framing of her paintings that he was urged to offer the service to friends and fellow artists, leading to the necessity for opening a successful framing business.
Robert was born in Washington, D.C., and served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and stationed in post-war Germany. He married Theresa Fitzhugh in 1952 and began his career with the Department of Interior while simultaneously attending the University of Maryland for a dual bachelor's and master's degree program in Accounting, where he graduated with honors. Robert and Theresa moved westward with each of Robert's career advancements, first to Denver, Colorado, next to Salt Lake City, Utah, next to Sacramento, California, then to Agana, Guam, and finally and happily to an early retirement in Waikoloa Village on the Big Island, Hawaii, where they lived for many happy decades.
Robert was adept at carpentry and home renovations, and studied, collected, and knew more than most about the Pan Am Clipper Flying Boats. His collection of Clipper memorabilia is fondly maintained and displayed by his family, with several pieces donated to the Treasure Island Museum in San Francisco Bay, the port of departure and arrival for the Clippers.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Howard L. and Elsie L. Fitzhugh, his brothers Howard and Donald Fitzhugh. Robert is survived by his wife, Theresa, sons Clifton and Daniel Fitzhugh, daughters Kathleen Fitzhugh Remitz and Kristina Fitzhugh, and many nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Holoholokai Beach Park near the Fairmont Orchid Resort, in Puako.
