Dr. Robert A. Burley
May 1927 – July 2024
Dr. Robert A. Burley, affectionately known as Dr. Bob, passed away peacefully in July 2024, at the age of 97, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised on a rural farm, 10 miles east of Lancaster, California during the Great Depression. His life began with humble beginnings and was marked by devotion and dedication.
After graduating high school with honors, he was drafted into the Army at 18. Following the war, he attended Occidental College and later graduated from Dental School at USC. In 1954, Bob married Sally Ruth Reynolds, and together they built a life and a family in Walnut Creek that spanned 70 wonderful years.
Dr. Bob established a successful dental practice in Walnut Creek, CA, serving the community for over 60 years. He held the position of President of the Contra Costa Dental Society and he was chairman of Peer Review for seven years. Dr. Bob was honored and inducted in 1994 into the American College of Dentists. His commitment to service extended beyond his practice; he volunteered at Children’s Hospital clinics, participated in study groups at UCSF, and traveled to Mexico to provide dental care. He was also an active member of Lions Club and later SIRS.
An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, Dr. Bob enjoyed tennis, skiing, fly fishing, backpacking, sailing, and exploring the world with Sally. He had a passion for bridge, history, geopolitics, gardening, and fitness, often taking daily walks. He also enjoyed making wine, visiting museums, attending opera, and learning Italian.
Dr. Bob was known for his humility, integrity, and quiet dignity. His laughter and sense of humor will be profoundly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, and their three children: Brian Arthur Burley, Robert Stephen Burley, and Cheryl Ruth Burley Gratz (Gary Gratz). plus six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Gardens at Heather Farm on November 1, 2024 at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Dr. Bob's memory.
