Robert's obituary
Captain Robert David “Bob” Berger passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 20 year off-and-on struggle with cancer. He was born on July 1, 1942, in Independence, Virginia, to David Joseph (“Joe”) and Pearl Elmore Berger of Gretna, Virginia.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol Kristin Berger; his parents; and his sister, Ann Roe Berger. He is survived by his children: Lucas and Christi Berger of Austin, Texas; Ryan and Megan Berger of Danvers, Massachusetts; Lauren and Weston Platter of Denver, Colorado; by his sister, Betty Jo Camden-Langston of Pittsville, Virginia; and by his former wife, Carole Robinson of Dover, New Hampshire. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren—Lucas (“Lucky”), Sophia, Isaiah, Hannah, and Evangeline (“Eva”)—as well as nephew Chip Camden and nieces Roanna and Christa Camden.
Bob graduated from Climax High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. After college, he entered the United States Air Force, serving proudly as a pilot of both the B-52 and the F-4 Phantom reconnaissance aircraft. For his bravery and service, he was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following his military career, Bob flew for Delta Air Lines for 32 years, retiring as a Captain on the Boeing 777. Flying was more than his profession—it was his passion. His career took him around the world and introduced him to people from all walks of life, including the opportunity to fly the Boston Red Sox to several games. Even during demanding six-day international trips to destinations such as Turkey, Russia, and India, Bob always found the energy to return home and support his children at their sporting events and musical performances.
In retirement, he continued sharing his love of aviation by flying Medevac and charter flights throughout New England. He also treasured his years as co-owner of a floatplane, bringing countless friends and family members along for flights and introducing them to the joy and freedom he found of being in the sky.
Bob and Carol were deeply committed to supporting high school students in the arts. When their children attended Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, they founded the Supporters of the Performing Arts (SOPA), which provided scholarships, hosted an annual awards banquet, and encouraged countless young performers.
In 2006, Bob was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After several doctors declined treatment, one physician offered an experimental therapy with only an 8% chance of any improvement. Within a year, Bob made a full recovery—a miracle the family never forgot. Throughout that season, Carol cared for him with extraordinary devotion, and together they encouraged others they met in hospital waiting rooms. Not long after Bob’s recovery, Carol’s health began to decline. From 2007 until her passing on May 21, 2021, Bob served as her faithful caregiver through her long journey with Parkinson’s disease.
Bob and Carol were longtime members of Faith Community Bible Church, where both served as Deacons and Bob as an elder. The Berger family is deeply grateful to their FCBC church family and to the many friends who supported them with steadfast love throughout Bob and Carol’s illnesses.
Bob’s life was marked by service, adventure, a deep trust in God, and profound love for his family and friends. His legacy lives on in all who were blessed to know him—both on the ground and in the skies he cherished.
