Bob's obituary

Robert “Bobby” Lawrence Beckelhymer was a caring and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Bob passed away on December 30, 2020 at age 87, after a short battle with health complications. He remained valiant, spirited, humorous, and full of life to the very end.

Robert was born and raised in Chatsworth, California on July 26, 1933 to George Beckelhymer and Vernadean Orey. Bob, an only child, was raised among his mother’s enormous and loving Orey clan. After graduating from high school, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed abroad in Labrador during the Korean War.

In 1953, while stationed in Georgia, Robert married Montine Powell and soon began the next chapter of his life - welcoming their 2 children, Terri and Greg. The family relocated to San Jose, California in 1958, where their youngest child Karen was born.

While raising his children, this fun-loving family man worked at Lockheed Martin aeronautics in Sunnyvale, California. With a career move to Orange County in 1976, Bob worked as an underwriter in the marine department for an insurance company. It was here that his love of sailing began, on his 34’ Ericson sailboat.

In the early 1980’s, Robert met the love of his life, Yvonne Beckelhymer, and the two married in 1987. Bob welcomed his stepsons Tim, Joe, and Chris - and the couple brought together two halves of a beautiful family, who all loved and revered Bob. Bob and Yvonne eventually relocated to the Spring Valley Lake community of the Mojave Desert in 2002, enjoying the stillness, serenity, and natural beauty of life.

Bob was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers and an active member of the Spring Valley Lake Community committees. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, poker games, poll-working elections, traveling the world with his wife, and spending time with his 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Robert’s extraordinary spirit lives on in the countless lives he has touched and lessons he has taught.

A private memorial ceremony will be held with immediate family at the Riverside National Cemetery on January 25, 2021.
