Robert's obituary

Robert Brown Bates died on June 11, 2020, in Tucson, Arizona. He was a natural products chemist, and for many years the head of organic chemistry at the University of Arizona. Much of his work focused on determining the structures of antitumor agents. He was a very serious birder, and got both his sons seriously engaged in the birding world. This took him all over, and he eventually saw over 8400 of the world's 10,000 birds. He loved hiking and climbing mountains, among them Mt. Rainier, Orizaba, and Popocatepetl. He also did many crosswords, and played competitive duplicate bridge. He is survived by his wife Deanna Bates, and his children David Bates, John Bates, and Elizabeth Wiseman.
