Robert N. LaChance
1933 - 2025
Durham NH - Robert N. LaChance, died peacefully at the age of 91 on Saturday July 12, 2025 at Riverwoods in Durham NH, with members of his loving family at his bedside.
Born in Waterville, Maine on July 23, 1933, the son of Florence and Joseph LaChance. He went to Winslow High discovering his passion for the trumpet, playing with the Winslow High School Band, the All-Kennebec Valley Band, was granted a scholarship at the New England Music Camp and played at the Eastern Maine Music Festival in 1951. Bob played for 3 years in both the American Legion Band and the Colby Community Symphony Orchestra. After graduating WHS he attended Coburn Classical Institute.
Bob married his high school sweetheart Shirley Rancourt on Aug. 7, 1954. In 1955 he joined the United Sates Air Force and for the next 23 years the lived on Air Force bases from Massachusetts to California, including time in Guam and Japan. He played for several presidents including at the funeral of J.F.K.. He also played in parades including the Macy’s Day and Rose Bowl parades. He did all of this while helping raise their 5 children.
After retiring from the Air Force, he returned to Winslow joining the US Postal Service and the St Johns Church choir where he became a Eucharistic minister. In 1991 he retired from the Post Office and began wintering in Zephyrhills, FL where he joined the St Joseph Church prayer group and choir, and Betmar community choir.
He is survived by five children; Dwaine LaChance and wife Kylie of Winslow, Brian LaChance and wife Kyle Marie of Portsmouth NH, Keith LaChance of Paris KY, Glen LaChance of Henniker NH, and Michele Miller of Oxford ME; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is now reunited with his wife who passed away April 9, 2015.
A memorial mass to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday September 5th, at St John’s Church, 26 Monument St, Winslow. It will be followed by his internment in the VA Memorial cemetery located at 143 Blue Star Ave in Augusta at noon.
