Woody's obituary
Richard "Woody" Yonts of Theodore, AL died on December 23, 2024. Born in Lexington, KY on June 20, 1958, Woody was a proud graduate of Tates Creek High School, where he played football under Coach Roy Walton, and The University of Kentucky. He lived in Lexington until 2016 when he moved to the gulf coast of Alabama to be near his four grandchildren: Lindsay, Ben Henry Jr., Eliza and Leah. Though they wish for more time with their Pop Pop, we are grateful for his presence in our lives and will cherish the wonderful memories of him.
Woody was a beloved husband, father, and brother. He is survived by his dear wife, Sandra Yonts, whom he married in 1983, creating a beautiful life together. Their journey was blessed with three wonderful children: Kara Mayfield (Ben) of Theodore, AL, Jared Yonts of Lexington, KY, and Bethany Botzet (Greg) of Lexington, KY. Their love and strength will carry on Woody's legacy. His brothers, Steve Yonts and Stewart Yonts, also survive him.
Woody was preceded in death by his loving parents, Homer and Marie Yonts. Their familial bond was one of great strength and unity, which Woody carried forward into his own family life.
Woody was known for his boisterous laugh, fun-loving spirit and community involvement. He generously offered his time to the Boy Scouts of America, being a beacon of guidance and mentorship for many young souls. He was also an active board member of Sigma Pi, influencing the fraternity with his leadership and brotherhood. He was a member of the Kentucky Plumbing Heating Cooling Association at the local, state, and national levels; he served as State President 1993-1994.
We invite all who knew and loved Woody to join us in celebrating his life and honoring his memory. Arrangements are as follows:
Visitation 9am-11am on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Pax Christi in Lexington, KY. A funeral mass will immediately follow at 11am.
A second memorial service will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at New Hope United Methodist Church.
