Obituary for Richard Paul Veasy
(December 5, 1960 – December 15, 2022)
Richard Paul Veasy was born on December 5, 1960, at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward. He attended Tennyson High School graduating with the class of ‘78. He was a talented athlete, lettering in tennis his freshman year. He was also a standout player on the varsity water polo team. But his real love was baseball, which led him to his lifelong passion for men’s fast pitch softball. While he was a versatile player, his talent as a catcher is what made him really stand out. He was part of many championship winning teams. He was a fierce competitor and brought everything he had to the game.
Rick served in the military after high school earning an honorable discharge from the Air National Guard in Hayward. He went on to work in construction and as a mechanic. He spent a decade behind the pins as mechanic at Castro Village Bowl, before going to work for Bob at A1 Construction in 2012. He was exceptional in that he showed up to work every day on time no matter what was going on in his personal life.
Easy Veasy had a heart of gold. If he had already given the shirt off his back, he would give you his pants. He always saw the good in people, which was a reflection of the good in him. Maybe he was easy because it rhymed, or maybe that was just a coincidence, but he was easy to be around, easy to befriend, and easy to love.
Rick died in his sleep of unknown causes on December 15, 2022, in San Leandro Hospital where he was being treated for a diabetic foot ulcer. He was also in the early diagnostic phase for myeloma, a serious and most likely terminal cancer of the blood cells. Biopsy results that came after his death confirmed that diagnosis. An autopsy was performed which ruled out a transient blood clot or internal bleeding from the biopsy as the cause of death. We are still awaiting the final report which will include the microscopic analysis. We were never given a satisfactory answer as to why the hospital didn’t have him on a heart monitor, given that he had gotten a pacemaker the prior year and had a history of high blood pressure.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Laurissa, 28, and Sophia, 24, his sister Virginia “Ginny” Huard, his brothers, John and Tim, and his longtime partner and best friend Melanie Le Mire. He was preceded in death by his mother Barbara (1931-2009), his father William (1922-2008), and his youngest brother Andy (1970-2009), and his oldest brother Mike (1954-2010).
Rest in peace my friend. You always had my back. Thank you for the gift that your life brought us. It’s hard to say goodbye. There will never be anyone like you again. Your smile, your laugh, your goofy sense of humor, were one of a kind. You will be sorely missed, but you live on in our hearts and will never be forgotten.
