Richard's obituary

In Loving Memory of Richard William Van Hulle

February 19, 1941 – July 7, 2025

With deep sorrow and enduring love, the family of Richard William Van Hulle announces his peaceful passing on July 7, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born on February 19, 1941, to William and Stella Van Hulle (née Van Damme), Richard was raised with strong values of service, integrity, and resilience—principles that shaped his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

Richard honorably served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his sense of duty and strength of character. Following his military service, he dedicated his professional life to public safety as a police officer and detective. Through his long career in law enforcement, retiring in 1990, Richard earned the respect of his colleagues and the gratitude of his community.

Beyond his professional life, Richard was a man of many talents and passions. He found joy in fishing, building and operating HAM radios, and owning and operating a Sprint Car racing team. A skilled craftsman, he spent countless hours creating knives and pens, each one a reflection of his care and precision.

Richard was the former husband of Connie Reiterman, and the proud father of two sons, Anthony Van Hulle and Thomas Van Hulle—who preceded him in death in 2023. Richard’s legacy lives on in his grandchildren: Richard, John, and Peter Van Hulle, children of Thomas and his wife Nancy; and Tyler and Will Rather, children of Anthony and his former spouse, Karen Bedker. He is also remembered with love by Anthony’s other children: Ashley, Corinne, Connor, Brendan, and Crystal Raymond.

For many years, Richard shared his life with his beloved partner, Jane Bunting Sage. Their enduring companionship was a source of comfort, joy, and mutual support, and she remained a devoted friend and champion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Stella Van Hulle, and his beloved son, Thomas. Richard’s life was marked by devotion—to his family, to his work, and to the passions that brought him joy.

He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his enduring sense of purpose, and the devotion he gave freely to those closest to him. His presence will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.

A private service will be held by the family to honor his life and memory. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in Richard’s name to a veterans’ or law enforcement support organization of your choice.
