Richard's obituary
Richard (Dick) Joe Stroud, 77, of Berrien Springs, MI passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, MI. He was born February 21, 1946 in Buchanan, MI to Charlie and Alma (McLaughlin) Stroud.
Dick served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force, and was stationed at Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. He became a professional farrier and blacksmith, and operated Dick Stroud Horse Shoeing since 1977.
Dick was a hard worker since childhood, and always ready to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Dick’s solid work ethic gave way to his tough, rugged, and reliable presence; at the same time, he was always tenderhearted and generous with a smile. Dick’s exceptional sense of humor and talent for telling memorable, often hilarious, stories, were a magnet that drew friends and family to the Stroud family farm. He enjoyed horseback riding, lively gatherings around a campfire, fixing and restoring and making old things beautiful, and most of all, the Green Bay Packers.
Dick is survived by his wife, Rosanne (Hostetler) Stroud, of Berrien Springs; son David (Ashley) Stroud, of Las Vegas, NV, daughter Carmen Stroud and her partner Marcella Mulhollem of Milwaukee, WI, stepdaughter Kara (Todd) Ranta of Sunnyvale, TX, and stepson Ryan (Amii) Hostetler of Grand Rapids, MI; former spouse Claudia Mierau; siblings Marjorie (Paul) Seccareccio of Berrien Springs and Lana (Joseph) Heimbuch of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren George Benske, Andrew Stroud, and Audrey Stroud; step-grandchildren Isabella Ranta, Olivia Ranta, Nolan Hostetler, Benjamin Hostetler, and Emma Hostetler; and countless adoring nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alma; infant brother, James Walter; sister Millie Fox and brother-in-law Clifford Fox; brother Charles “Bud” Stroud and sister-in-law Eileen Stroud; sister Mary Hesch and brother-in-law Harold Hesch; brother Phillip Stroud; and brother Lloyd Stroud and sister-in-law Kay Stroud.
