Richard's obituary
Rick Snider passed away peacefully at home on McKechnie Lake on January 9th at 78 years old, leaving behind a legacy woven with a profound love for family, nature, science, and winged creatures. His fascination with butterflies, moths, and birds led him to meticulously document and expertly photograph each species he encountered making endless contributions to science through submissions and species identifications. In 2009 Rick made history when he observed a rare Bare-throated Tiger Heron in Texas, the first time the bird has been sighted in the United States.
With his patient nature, Rick inspired countless students in classrooms and on nature walks with his enthusiasm for learning. As a naturalist and an avid birder, he found solace in observing and studying birds and sharing his love for the natural world with everyone he met.
Rick’s memory lives on in the hearts of those touched. Friends and family will be invited to gather at a Celebration of Life later this year, details will be shared once a date has been chosen.
In lieu of flowers, for any wishing to express sympathies, our family would appreciate donations made in Rick’s memory to the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation (Palliative care), the Canadian Cancer Society, the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club https://hamiltonnature.org/ or planting a tree in Rick’s memory.
