Richard's obituary
Richard Ray Russell passed away peacefully at his home in Eugene, OR on Monday April 7th, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones. He was 85 years old.
Richard was born in National City, CA on October 26th, 1939 to his parents Leroy Ray Russell and Bonita Lorraine Basye Altman.
He was raised in San Diego by his father and second mother, Ruby Hammer Russell. He lived a happy young life growing up with his three younger brothers Allen, Kenneth, and Howard Russell, all of whom have preceded him in death, and his sister Linda Russell Lundquist who is surviving. He greatly loved his Uncles, Aunts and cousins and had so many warm and funny stories to tell about their adventures.
Richard married Paulette Sue Fimple on September 5, 1964 and had just celebrated their 60th anniversary. Their loving marriage produced three children, Richelle Rae Russell (Kevin) Olson of Oregon, Kenneth Michael Russell (who died in 1989) and Arlene Sue Russell (Eric) Taylor of California. Their young family made homes and friends in many different places throughout Oregon, Nevada, and California before Richard and Paulette settled in Eugene about 30 years ago.
Richard also has two children, Cindy Lorraine Russell Lenard of Oklahoma and Richard Leroy Russell of Idaho, from previous marriages.
Richard had many vocations throughout his life…his favorites being on ski patrol in Tahoe, Ca, doing high rise construction with his father, being an ornamental iron worker, contractor and commercial fisherman. Richard always loved to be in the outdoors abalone diving, fishing, hunting and camping. He was always quick to help a friend. Richard passed his love for building and fixing things on to his daughters and was always excited to teach them a new skill.
Richard had the fortune of watching six grandchildren grow up. He was so proud of Keegan, Camden and Finley Taylor and Collin, Rogan and Keira Olson. His eyes never lit up as much as when he was watching his grandkids play. Cindy Russell also gave him a granddaughter and three great grandchildren.
Richard lived a long and adventurous life full of joy and tragedy, miracles and misfortune. He will be greatly missed, but our memories and love for him will sustain us until we meet again. May he rest in peace knowing how much he was loved and free now from the pain he'd long endured.
In lieu of flowers we would love to invite you to share memories, stories and pictures of Richard. For those who have expressed the desire to help Paulette with expenses, we have included that opportunity here and are very grateful.
