Richard's obituary

Richard Myhre, age 92, died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, in Palm Harbor, Florida on July 7, 2024.

Richard was born on February 13, 1932 in Gary, Indiana, to Thorbjorn and Marie Myhre. He grew up in Chicago and spent summers along the shores of Lake Michigan. After graduating from Fenger HIgh School in 1950, Richard studied engineering at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. After college, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and served in Germany. His time in the military was a meaningful part of his life.

His first engineering job took him to Cleveland, Ohio, where he met the love of his life, Elaine Lovasy. They married in 1960. Richard’s career in the steel industry brought them to Chicago, where they raised three daughters in Homewood, Illinois. He loved wood carving, birdwatching, and traveling to jazz music festivals, especially those that featured Dixieland bands. He was active in the Sherlock Holmes club, and Sons of Norway. He was a passionate coin collector, and one of his life goals was achieved when he acquired a three legged buffalo nickel!

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Thorbjorn and Marie, and by his wife, Elaine Lovasy Myhre. He is survived by his daughters and their families: Cheryl Myhre Allen and husband Fred Allen of Palm Harbor, Florida, Kari Myhre Paz and husband Maro Paz of Bend, Oregon, and Suzanne Myhre Johnson and husband Jeff Johnson of Bend, Oregon;  his grandchildren Heather Allen Hendry and husband Drew Hendrey of St. Petersburg, Florida; Frederick Allen and wife, Olesja Allen, of Dover, New Hampshire, Connor Johnson and wife Olivia Darrow of Ogden Utah, Gabriel Johnson and fiance Carly Knights of Bozeman, Montana, William Johnson and fiance Margot Diffendaffer of Missoula, Montana; Annika Paz, Xavier Paz, and Zele Paz, all of Bend, Oregon;  and great-grandchildren Aspen Allen and Flora Allen of Dover, New Hampshire, and Violet Hendry, Magnolia Hendry, and Dahlia Hendry, all of St. Petersburg, Florida. As a father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, he was very loved and will be deeply missed.

Please join the family for a short celebration of life to be held in Homewood this fall. Details will be posted on this page. The family would love to hear memories or stories about Richard on the Everloved site. Donations in his memory can be made to North Pinellas Sun Coast Hospice, at https://suncoasthospice.org.
