Dick's obituary
Richard Leroy Holland, 89, of Valley Center, passed away peacefully at his home in El Camino Village on January 14, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering love for family, old cars, and animals alike.
Born in Van Nuys, Richard proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran before building a long and dedicated career with Pacific Bell Telephone Company, from which he retired after many years of service. He raised his children in Gardena, instilling values of integrity, humility, and compassion that would ripple through generations. In retirement, he found his greatest joy in Valley Center, the home he loved most, where he embraced a slower pace of life surrounded by the things that mattered most to him.
Richard was a devoted father to Brent Holland and Cheryl Holland-Bonilla; a proud grandfather to Chrysta Ellis Maiers, Alexandria Bonilla, Jack-Andrew Richard Girvin, Amanda Peralta, and Carter Girvin; and a cherished great-grandfather to five. He is survived by his son, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two brothers, William Holland and Ronald Holland. He was predeceased by his daughter, Cheryl, his wife Penny Holland, and his sister Judy Rady.
An avid animal lover, he had a special fondness for Great Danes and Dachshunds and never turned away a stray cat—earning a reputation as a rescuer and ridiculous-name-giver of every feline that crossed his path.
A quiet and gentle giant with a heart of gold, Richard had a natural penchant for helping anyone in need, never seeking recognition for his generosity. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his compassion, and the deep love he held for his family, his animals, his cars, and his home. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
