Richard's obituary
Richard and I do not think much of obituaries. They tend to be boring and
one thing my husband was not was boring. Samantha, our chosen daughter,
asked if we could do a memorial page and I told her, sure if she would do it.
She asked if I would try and write an obituary and I told her to let me think
about it overnight. The next day I told her that Richard should speak for
himself, and that we could put something together from his private musings.
Following are (mostly) quotes from Richard, written by Richard during the
last decade of his life. It is for Richard in Richard’s own words. (His
favorite!) * Please forgive any inconsistencies as where quotes are indicated
they are Richard’s unedited musings.
“August 2016 My Own Eulogy . . . in Advance of Death :
In the HE voice.
HE was a person of the early 20th century and part of the 21st century.
See my notes on the He Was Born in a Corporation. ‘He was born and raised
inside an organization. He grew through hard and good times . . .through
healthy and unhealthy climates.”
“The first organization of importance to me was the military. Drafted into the
Army and assigned to the Human Engineering Lab in Army Ordinance at
Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland where he was a Project Director of a
nuclear warhead missile system. There he tried to start a union (yes). While
that was nixed he did develop into a conflict reducer regarding courts-martial
within the Science Army programs. While I believe that this was my first
experience at achieving worthwhile goals, I now think looking back to any
goals, as small as they were, they too helped me understand that doing good
work and making people happy with my work and earning money, no matter
how little, was truly achieving worthwhile goals. That pursuit and passion are
in me to ACHIEVE worthwhile goals”
“When he developed the concept of human love in management some were
frightened that it was antithetical to the goals of the enterprise. It took him
some years to understand why this was the case. He came to appreciate
DeToqueville’s statement that the manager at the top wants people below to
love and admire him . . . but not each other.
Peter Drucker, his mentor on his PhD thesis, urged him to convert the
theoretical to the practical. He abandoned scientific pursuits, stopped doing
research and writing and is now doing what he does best.”
He developed, preached and lived The Unique Theory of Motivation and
Relationship Excellence based on Love in Management on his notion of
mutual CRAVE-U (Care, Respect, Accept, Value Encourage and Understand).
Richard was never about the theoretical and always about practical
achievement. He was ever a futurist prepared to ponder new ideas and see
them actuated in experiences designed to improve life for whoever he came
across.
A few highlights: As a quite young man, and while at ITT Federal
Laboratories, he gave a keynote presentation at the First Space Conference
which later became NASA. Richard worked as corporate level Vice
Presidents at ITT, IBM, Chase Bank Corporate Headquarters. He was
President of Lee Hecht Consultants until ultimately decided to work for
himself. He enjoyed tremendous success and was able to work on every
continent, save Antartica.
“The influence of Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy was more than all others.”
“As to My Future . . . Into Eternity
I take my own lessons and have created a wonderful life of love with my
beloved wife of near 40 years, Carôn. In it there was all and more than all.
The certainty I once had that this life was full of mortal error and joy only for
a brief period of infinity as changed. When we both have closed our eyes
forever it will be even better: someday, somewhere, somehow, in some
spiritual form in some unnamed and immortal Land of Whatsoever we will be
together again. As we leave this life, we do so with confidence in the great
Oneness that we will be again know as home. I know it more clearly than I
did.”
Richard passed Monday, December 1, 2025. He is survived by his wife,
Carôn, his daughter Lori Victoria Wolf (Chaim), his step-daughter Courtney
Caswell-Peyton, his chosen-daughter Samantha McKenzie, his daughter-in-
law Ronit Lazar (Lon Scott), his grandchildren Yosef Lazar (Cherna), Yudi
