Jerry's obituary

Passed away peacefully to Heaven from Valleyview Home in St. Thomas, Ontario on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Jerry Lavender, formerly of Harrow, Windsor and London, Ontario was in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late Patricia Gloria (nee Fickeau) for 66 years. Loving father of David, Vicki (Owen), Paul (Karen), and the late Kathryn Joyce Lavender. Cherished ‘Papa’ of Alexander Issac (Elizabeth Anne) Lavender, Rachel (Ryan) Adamson, Mitchell Parker (Kelsey) and Georgia Bea Lavender (Aidan). Dear brother of Joyce Eileen Webb (Donald) and Cassandra Joan Poppelreiter (Robert). Loving great grandfather of Arlowe Adamson, and Olivia Bea and Lily Grace Lavender. He is predeceased by his parents Richard Sylvester and Elizabeth Beatrice (nee Rielly) Lavender, brother Robert Benjamin Lavender, and siblings-in-law, Charles Fickeau Jr., Audrey (nee Fickeau) (Merle) Pleiness, and Donald Albert Webb.

Jerry was proud of his service for over 50 years in setting the standards for the test and balance of building mechanical systems as a founding member of the Canadian Associated Air Balance Council (CAABC) and his company, Airwaso Ltd., and a member of the American Society of Heating and Ventilation Engineers (ASHRAE) since 1959.

Family and friends will remember Jerry’s love of family, and with Pat, their commitment to provide home-care for Kathryn who was disabled and resided with the family for 46 years. Jerry also took a special interest in the Christian education of his children as a Sunday School Teacher and active member of the First Lutheran Church Kingsville and Christ Lutheran Church, Harrow. He later served to coordinate the expansion of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Windsor in 1984.

Jerry was also a quiet, ambitious, and determined man. Inspired by Lawrence of Arabia, he was always up for a challenge, whether it was as a team member of the AKO Fratmen - 1947 Eastern Champion of the Junior Canadian Rugby Union, constructing his first home in Windsor with Pat, his enthusiasm for exotic foreign cars long before it was popular, sailing, ballroom dancing, or operating his own business. Over several decades, they opened their Pleasant Valley home for numerous family reunions, fabulous dinners, countless games of bridge with friends, and the annual (in)famous neighbourhood all-night pig-roast party. Jerry directed construction of their retirement home in Egmondville, Ontario, while in his 80’s.

The family expresses their deep appreciation to the careworkers of the Valleyview Home in St. Thomas, Ontario. Your professional and compassionate care made our father's last years peaceful to his passing.
