Richard's obituary

Richard Edward Klunk, devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025, at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was 71 years old. He was surrounded by family and loved ones in his final moments, a fitting end for a man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and connection.

Born on September 27, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio, Rick—affectionately known to many—was the beloved son of Richard Albert Klunk and Lucille Klunk. He spent his early years in Columbus and Sandusky, eventually settling in Bexley. Rick attended St. Catharine’s Parish school and graduated from Bexley High School, where he excelled as a student-athlete in swimming, football, and baseball.

Rick continued his education at Morehead State University, where he was a member of the swim team from 1971 to 1973. He transferred to The Ohio State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing in 1976. A lifelong Buckeye, he remained an enthusiastic supporter of Ohio State athletics, especially football.

Rick’s professional journey began in the restaurant industry as a management trainer for TGI Fridays, a role that took him across the country. Eventually, he returned to Columbus to pursue a successful career in financial planning. Known for his strategic mind and calm demeanor, Rick earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike. His career ultimately brought him to Texas, where he lived in Round Rock from 2000 to 2017 before settling in Bulverde, where he retired in 2018.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rick was a man of many passions. He was an avid golfer and a proud member of Canyon Springs Golf Club, where he formed deep and lasting friendships and won many tournaments. He was also a music enthusiast with an impressive vinyl record collection that he joyfully shared with his sons. Whether it was classic rock, jazz, or soul, Rick believed there was a song for every moment—and he often found it.

Above all, Rick’s proudest accomplishment was his family. He married the love of his life, Jennifer Leslie, on May 12, 1990. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, devotion, and deep-rooted love. He is survived by his cherished sons, Alexander and Malcolm Klunk, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, and wit.

Rick is also survived by his siblings Tim (Mary), Mary (Laurie), and Julie Klunk, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his brothers Martin (Sue) and Matthew Klunk, and his sister Peggy Sheahan. A man of deep family loyalty, Rick treasured time spent at reunions and gatherings with his large extended family.

Rick lived his life with grace, humility, and a quiet strength that touched everyone he met. His laughter was contagious, his advice was wise, and his presence was comforting. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, in honor of Rick’s generous and compassionate spirit.
