My family only just learned of Col Husemann's passing. He had such an impact on the life of our daughter, Ruby McKain. They first met at St. Marks where Ruby played basketball under his nuturing coaching. During that time, he shared that he was a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. Ruby was very impressed and inspired by his enthusiam for that accomplishment. They kept in touch and eventually, Col. Husemann sheperded Ruby through the USAFA application process. We were all so thrilled when Ruby was accepted at USAFA and touched that Col. Husemann attended a ceremony at her high school to present her with her appointment. They kept in touch during her time at USAFA and he sent her so many beautifully written, encouraging letters throughout her time there. We had all hoped he would be able to attend her graduation in June 2021, but of course the pandemic (and likely the myeloma) precluded that. He did, however, send a beautiful graduation gift and some personal memorabilia that I know Ruby will treasure forever. Such a wonderful and special man! We are so grateful to have known him!!! Sending much love to his family.

Coach Husemann was one of the kindest person and had the warmest heart. I saw him as a grandfather and he treated me like family. I loved playing for him and I’m so saddened by this. Great loss to the future basketball players/students who won’t get to meet such a caring soul. My favorite memory of us is when I injured my knee in a game against cape fear and “that’s life” turned on the speakers and me an coach sitting on the bench just singing.
