Richard's obituary
Mr. Smith taught for Middle Country Schools for 34 years. He was known as “a gentle-man” and for his kind acts. He touched hundreds of children’s lives along the way. His family was treated to many summers on Fire Island where he worked as a park ranger. Life-long friends and memories were made there.
Dick enjoyed photography and was well known for his video recorder on his shoulder. Flower gardening, bird watching, nature, boating, singing at church, dancing, music, and family were some of the things that made him happy. He had a lot of fond memories of singing with his mom and siblings. He loved his family and traveled around the country regularly to visit and he also enjoyed vacationing with his wife. His faith and family were the cornerstones of his life. He was our strength.
Richard was born and spent his childhood in Pittsburg, PA. He was the first of seven born to Richard E. Smith and Norma Elizabeth King. His siblings Anne (Saxe), Bob, Sally (Morris), Bonnie (De Vault), David, and Gary would follow. The family moved to Long Island, New York. His life-long love of the water started in Bayshore. He proudly served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War. Afterward, he met his bride at Siena College and they married in 1954. The couple first resided in Albany and after the birth of their first daughter, Maureen, moved to Long Island. They had four more children Christopher, Kathleen (Pero), Virginia (Fitzgerald), and Patrick. Selden, NY was his home for fifty-eight years. He is survived by 9 grandchildren, Amanda, Andrea, Deirdre, Christopher, Emilee, Amber, Brianna, Christopher, and Jonathan. He is also survived by many great grandchildren.
Smooth sailing kind sir! May the wind always be on your back. You'll be missed.
