Richard's obituary
Richard Lee Hamm, 62, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 18, 2021.
Richard was born on March 1959 to Leonard and Lucille Hamm of Houston, Texas. He attended Jack Yates High School where he played varsity football. After graduating from Jack Yates in 1978, Richard attended Texas Southern University to pursue his goal and dream of becoming a teacher.
He achieved that goal upon graduating from TSU when he began his teaching career at Garden Villas Elementary School on August 26, 1987 and achieved another milestone upon completing a phenomenal 25-year tenure there. Mom and dad would be so proud.
During Richard's tenure at Garden Villas Elementary, he was a Multiple Year Honoree, nominated to be included in the prestigious publication, "Who's Who Among America's Teachers", as he made an impactful difference in many students lives during his tenure as a 4th and 5th Grade Teacher there.
Richard also received the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educator's Teacher Of The Year Award (HAABSE) for years 1999-2000 and 2004-2005 as well as the 2009 National Blue Ribbon Award and numerous other certificates and awards including Certificate of Academic Excellence in April 2010.
In 2012, our beloved brother, Richard, received a Certificate of Recognition from HISD honoring him for his 25 years of excellent service. Mr. Richard Lee Hamm retired on May 27, 2016.
In his retirement years, Richard was very active with his church, the Philadelphia Church of God in Houston, Texas where he was a member for over 10 years. Both he and his son, Richard Jr., were faithful members and traveled extensively with the church fulfilling God's mission. At Richard's heart was love for God and the importance of family. Richard's favorite scripture was Ecclesiastes 12:13 which reads, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." We are devastated, but find comfort knowing that he has a better home in heaven where he will find rest for his soul.
Richard is predeceased by parents Leonard Hamm, Sr. and Lucille Hamm. He is survived by siblings, Rose (Thomas) Gardner, Betty Ham, Barbara Landry, Penny Tallamon and Leonard Ham, Jr.; Ex-Wife, Brenda Gay; son, Richard Lee Isaac Hamm, Jr., and daughters Tramaine Charlene Johnson and Tangelia Chantilly Gay, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, and extended family members. He was a devoted dad, faithful church member, loving mentor to many students over his long teaching career, child of God and obedient servant to God.
It was our brother's wishes to be cremated instead of having traditional funeral services. Richard Lee Hamm is truly missed and he will FOREVER BE IN OUR HEARTS. I LOVE YOU MY DEAR BROTHER!
The Hamm Family would like to thank ALL of those who offered condolences, gave kind words, shared loving memories, offered support and are especially grateful to ALL of those who have been indelibly touched by his life here on earth. Your work on earth is now done, both natural and spiritual. Rest now, until we meet again. WE ARE ALL SO VERY PROUD OF YOU RICHARD, AND WE LOVE YOU!
