Richard's obituary
Richard Dwayne Elce, 1957-2026, lived a life that was as full of heart as it was full of stories. If you ever sat next to him at a bar, a pool table, or anywhere else, you probably heard more than a few of them.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and carried that patriotism with him every day of his life. Many people knew him as “Flag Man”- the guy with the giant flagpole and American flag, showing up to events with pride and purpose. He didn’t just love his country, he showed it, loudly, visibly, and with his whole heart.
But he wasn’t just a patriot. He was also a pool shark, a storyteller, and someone who could turn any ordinary night into a memorable one. He spent decades playing billiards, perfecting his game and, more importantly, enjoying the company of his friends. If there was a pool table, a cold drink, and good company, he was exactly where he wanted to be.
Outside of daily life, his heart belonged to the mountains and to Mexico, two places that brought him peace, joy, and likely a few stories that were better left a little mysterious. And at home, his German Shepherds were more than pets - they were his loyal companions, especially in his later years, helping him through some of life’s toughest moments.
He loved deeply - his family, his friends, his dogs - and he showed it in both big and small ways. He was charismatic, principled, and never afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He could make people laugh in almost any situation, but beneath that humor was a man who felt everything deeply and cared fiercely about the people in his life.
I am his only child, and he wasn’t just my dad, he was my best friend. He raised me, stood by me, and walked beside me through everything. I will carry his strength, his humor, and his big, stubborn, loving heart with me always.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a lot of laughter, and probably a few unfinished games of pool. And somewhere, you can imagine him still holding that flag high.
