Richard's obituary

Richard Paul DeBragga, aged 73 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep last night October 28, 2024, at the Meadows in Dallas Pennsylvania. He was born on July 3rd, 1951. Richard was raised by Dana and Joe DeBragga and was the brother of two sisters Julie and Josette. Richard grew up in the town of Islip, Long Island, where he lived most of his life before settling in Bellport Village. From 1966-1970 He attended high school at St. George’s school in Rhode Island where he found a penchant for History. He then attended Amherst College where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974, majoring in History. Richard went on to complete his Juris Doctorate at Albany Law School in 1978. He began working as an attorney for the Town of Islip, where he met his wife, Joan and her son Patrick (PJ). His son Matthew was born in the winter of 1989. Richard raised both boys well, as his own sons. Richard later went on to become the Director of Properties for Avis Car rental, traveling the world and negotiating as the attorney and representative for Avis. Richard also practiced privately as a tax attorney, and finally was appointed the Brookhaven tax assessor, where he ran the assessor’s office until his retirement in 2022. He is survived by his wife Joan and his son Matthew. Richard was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bellport Village, serving faithfully on the Vestry and as treasurer for many years. Richard daily read the following Bible Verse: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall Direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
