Richard's obituary
Richard was born in New York City, on November 21, 1962 to the late Ruby Burrison Clinkscales, a fervent educator, and Richard Clinkscales, a respected businessman. The family later moved to Washington D.C., where Richard attended Archbishop Carroll High School, and ultimately graduated from Springbrook High School. A recognized athlete and sports enthusiast, Richard was active in football, baseball, and track and field, where he held track records at Springbrook High School.
After high school, Richard attended Central State University in Ohio. He later enlisted in the US Army where he served for 4 years in Mannheim, Germany. After leaving the Army, he worked for the federal government in the Naval Surface Weapons Warfare Center.
However, his true passion was culinary arts. While working for the government, Richard began his cooking endeavors as a self-taught cook, gaining early experience at Waters Catering. He then pursued a full-time culinary career, going on to become a highly sought-after Chef and Private Caterer where he hosted countless large functions –including events for many chapters within the “Divine Nine”. He was also employed by numerous restaurants, and worked for organizations like: The People’s Community Baptist Church, DC Central Kitchen, NOVA Juvenile Detention Center, Sidwell Friends School, and the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field Stadium.
In 1986, Richard and his former spouse, Brenda Clinkscales were blessed to have their only child, Richard Michael Clinkscales II. Though their marriage ended, they remained cordial. Richard then met Dorothy Beal, and in 1995 he was blessed with his second child, a beautiful daughter, Diamond Michelle Clinkscales. Richard was so proud to have what he called “the best of both worlds”--a son and a daughter.
Known to many as a hard worker and a loving friend, Richard was never shy about being the life of the party or cracking a joke. Richard enjoyed traveling the world, most recently completing several cruises with his girlfriend, Adina. In his spare time, Richard could be found watching college football, the Washington Redskins with his son, or his cowboy western television programs.
While his health started declining in recent years, Richard was strong and resilient. He was working to get his health back on track, so he could see his new grandson grow up to take on his name.
On January 16, 2023, God called his child home for eternal rest, passing at age 60. Richard is survived by: his son, Richard II, daughter, Diamond, grandson, Richard III, and many friends and loved ones.
