Dick's obituary
Richard A. (Dick) Cecchetti, 83, died in his sleep on December 12, 2023. Born in 1940 in Dover, he spent most of his life in the Seacoast area; his favorite place as a child was Bow Lake, Strafford, NH on his grandfather’s farm. His last residence was at the Inn at Deerfield and we thank their wonderful & caring staff!
He is predeceased by his parents Olive (Polly) Hanson and Lester Hendrickson, his step-fathers Edward Cecchetti and George Hood, and also his brother Carlo Cecchetti. He leaves his sister Linda LaBounty of St. Regis Falls, NY and his children Richard E. and wife Lynda of Strafford, NH; Sherry Hayes and husband Glenn of Barrington; Peter and wife Terry of Norwich, CT; and Edward of Norwich, CT. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was an amazing mechanic and worked at Mikol Bros, Taccetta Chevrolet and O’Brien Trucking. He also had his own garages on Islington and Cate Streets & Gosling Rd. The latter part of his career he serviced boats throughout the seacoast.
Although he died quietly it is not the way Dick lived. His Portsmouth High School nickname of RAC1 gives a hint. He drove fast, lived fast and loved much. From building nitromethane fueled race engines to overhauling bulldozers there wasn’t an engine he couldn’t fix. He had a real passion for boats and owned a few “Shady Lady’s”.
His dementia diagnosis made for a long, slow slog, but he kept his sense of humor throughout, still enjoying long rides over NH backroads with his son Rick, trying to figure out where this or that dirt road ends up. As he shuffles off this mortal coil we are comforted to know that he is no doubt drinking coffee with his old buddies, Leroy, Preston, Jack, Rolly, Patch and others. There are lots of stories to be told…some are even true!
He requested no memorial services and will be buried privately in Caverly Cemetery in Strafford, NH.
