Butch's obituary

USAF Master Sergeant (Ret) Richard “Butch” D. Carrier of Shalimar, Florida left this world for a better place on March 13, 2022, at the age of 78. Butch was born in Fall River, Massachusetts to Joseph and Lena Carrier.

In 1960, Butch joined the Air Force at the age of 17 to embark on the beginning of a great adventure that lasted a lifetime. A Vietnam Veteran, he proudly served for 22 years.

In June of 1963 he married Yvette Coulombe, his 4th grade sweetheart. They began their 58-year marriage at Loring AFB in Maine where they welcomed their first daughter, Wendy. In 1965 he was assigned to Osan AFB, South Korea where he was sent on temporary duty to Nha Trang, Vietnam. Upon his return to the states, he was assigned to McClellan AFB Sacramento, California where their second daughter, Dawn, was born. Then after an assignment to Colorado Springs he was transferred to Québec, Canada to serve alongside the Canadian Forces for 3 years. After a short stint at Hanscom AFB in Massachusetts he was called to duty at AFSOUTH, Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy for 4 years where the family enjoyed travel throughout Europe. His last assignment was at Randolph AFB, Texas where he retired after 5 years. He went on to work in the retail clock business for many years in the San Antonio area. Fulfilling his long-held dream, as empty nesters he and Yvette traveled the country for 4 years in their RV. Later in life, he developed a passion for cruising and he and Yvette enjoyed many cruises throughout the Caribbean and to Alaska. In 2018 Butch and Yvette retired to Bob Hope Enlisted Air Force Village settling in with their Air Force retiree family.

As a young airman, Butch was determined to provide for his family, at times working three jobs to give them the life he felt they deserved. He was devoted to his wife and children and created wonderful family memories of sports, travel, camping, bicycling, board games, and other family-centered activities. He was a proud and generous grandfather, always interested and supportive of the activities of his grandchildren. A kid at heart, when playing with his grandchildren, Butch encouraged mischief at every opportunity.

Over the years, Butch and Yvette made life-long friends from the various places they lived and traveled. Butch was a wonderful host and would ensure any out-of-town visitor was given a full itinerary of all the sites and experiences unique to wherever was home at the time.

Butch was predeceased by parents, Joseph and Lena Carrier, sister, Joyce Everly, and brother, Gerald Carrier. He is survived by his wife, Yvette, daughters Wendy McGuff (Doug), and Dawn Tannous (Sam III), grandchildren, Eric McGuff, Madeline McGuff and Sabrina Tannous, sisters, Dawn Maitoza (Ray) and Susan Carrier and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorial donations to the Histiocytosis Association  (www.histio.org) in lieu of flowers. A graveside service will be held (date and time pending) at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola Florida.
