OBITUARY FOR RICHARD ARTHUR BROWN
On August 17th, 2025, Richard Arthur Brown of Oakville, Connecticut died peacefully at Waterbury Hospital. He was born February 1, 1943 in New Britain, Connecticut, son of Arthur G. Brown from Presque Isle, Maine, and Alice M. (Vredenburgh) Brown of New Britain, Connecticut. He spent his childhood in New Britain and graduated from New Britain Senior High School in 1961. He briefly attended Central Connecticut State College, also in New Britain. In later years he received an Associates Degree from Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut under the G.I. Bill.
Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1962 and attended Photography School in Pensacola, Florida. He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut and also the U.S Naval Station in Rota, Spain, where he and his wife Judith travelled extensively. He was honorably discharged in 1969, as a Photographer’s Mate First Class (E-6). Richard continued to work in the field of photography his whole life, including industrial, retail, and custom photo labs until his retirement in 2001. He also photographed weddings for family and friends. Richard’s love of photography never waned, he shared that passion with everyone by restoring old pictures of loved ones for others, and creating and selling kaleidoscope-like floral note cards at craft fairs in the area.
Richard was predeceased by his first wife Judith A. (Stockno) Brown, a Registered Nurse, who passed away in 2004 after a long illness, leaving behind her brother Robert Stockno who passed away August 2007, his wife Karen, and several nieces and nephews.
Richard married Anita (Dodier) Bond, from Lebanon, New Hampshire in 2006 and they took up residence in Oakville, Connecticut until she passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. In spite of several serious illnesses, Richard loved life, family, and friends. He tried to live his life by the Golden Rule.
He shared his love of the ocean, music, and cars with his wife Anita and their extended family. He enjoyed automobile racing, especially NASCAR, and could often be seen driving around Connecticut and New Hampshire with Anita in their 1990 red Mazda Miata with the top down. Richard and Anita kept a camper at Loon Lake Campground in New Hampshire. Family was very important to them, and they enjoyed many years spending most of each summer by the lake and visiting with Anita’s extensive family and friends.
In recent years, Richard enjoyed playing Scrabble and visiting with his friends at the Watertown Library, Oakville Branch.
Richard is survived by his son, Richard Scott Brown and his wife, MaryJane Sullivan Brown of Oakville, his daughter, Alyson Lee Brown, also of Oakville, his step-children, Linda Cole of West Lebanon, New Hampshire, Doreen Moodie, of Enfield, New Hampshire, Brian Bond and his wife Margaret, of Bedford, New Hampshire, Terri Sanborn and her husband Daniel, of Ashville, North Carolina, and several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Moriarty of Storrs, Connecticut, and her son Shawn Moriarty and his family.
Richard’s family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27th, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, Connecticut 06095.
