Renata's obituary

Renata Antonia di Florio passed away peacefully on January 23, 2018 at age 80 surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born and raised in Italy and received her PhD in biology at the University of Bologna. In 1959 she moved to the U.S. with her husband Enzo, a physician, whose death predeceased her in 2008. She did her post doctoral work in sickle cell anemia research at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Renata stopped working in 1962 to raise her four children, and then resumed her education, graduating in 1985 with an MSW from Bryn Mawr College. She worked at the Child Guidance program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia until she retired.

Renata was passionate about the arts, science, her Italian culture and cuisine and most of all about her family, to which she was thoroughly devoted. She is most remembered by her family for her radiant and creative energy, unconventional wisdom, irresistible charm, and boundless love.

Surviving are Renata’s daughter Roberta and her husband Watt, her daughter Paola and her husband Peter, her son Marco and his wife Alison, her son Carlo and his wife Jasmine, and her nine grandchildren Sam, Giulia, Dylan, Sylvie, Matteo, Michela, Luca, Lila and Alex. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, nieces and nephews in Italy.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of her spirit, donations may be made to the Renata di Florio Educational Fund for Young Women in Biological Sciences at Nerd Girls.com. This Fund is in the process of being created.
