Rena's obituary

It is with a heavy heart that I share this.

Rena Mae Hinkson Reed, woke up with a host of angels escorting her through the pearly gates of heaven on Friday, August 26, 2022. She was a wearer of many hats. The best hats were that of wife, mom, mother-in-law, granny, great granny and even great great granny. Of the numerous times we chatted, I know she had been a caregiver (similar to a CNA) and a minister at the Mortonsville Assembly of God in Mortonsville, Kentucky. Rena was a very classy lady, genuinely concerned and beautiful inside and out! She loved to get her hair done at the salon, and would do her own nails at home. I can hear her now saying, “Hello” when she would answer her phone. I can hear the smile on the other end of the line.

Over the 28 years I have known her, it was a blessing to sit and converse with her about everything and anything that would come up. She would talk about family history, raising children and her faith to name a few. A woman of faith, I could call her with any prayer request and expect that she would keep the chain going. One person told me she looked to Rena as a Prophetess of the gospel. Rena had dreams that our first child would be a boy, our second a girl and she helped name our youngest son. Rena had a mother’s glue-like quality that would help hold everyone together. I know of several times I shared tears with her.

Rena said goodbye to the love of her life, Clay Allen Reed, Jr (Sonny), in September 1999. She shared their story with us and how they came full circle. Rena’s best friend was Bessie. Bessie’s boyfriend, Buddy (later known as Uncle Buddy), came to take Bessie on a date. Buddy arrived at Bessie’s house with Sonny, a blind date for Rena. “When I saw that tall drink of water,” she would say about him. Rena said their first date was at Parkette Drive-in, Lexington, KY. Prior to his passing, Sonny had taken Rena to eat at Parkette, and asked if she wanted a t-shirt, “This is our old stompin’ ground after all.” He got her a Parkette t-shirt and she probably wore the shirt out. She also had a rock collection lining her flower bed from the places they had traveled.

I can only imagine the reunion in Heaven today as she stepped through the gates to see all those loved ones who went before her: Sonny; their son Clay Allen, III; her mom, Elizabeth Vandy; dad, William Colis Hinkson; twin sisters (passed at birth); brother, Billy Hinkson; and cousin Margaret Sidener, but most of all she is in the presence of Jesus. I know her favorite poem was “Footprints in the Sand” and Bible passage was Psalm 23. Today, Rena was carried away by the Master, with only the one set of footprints in the sand. Today, this family has a very heavy, broken heart! The family is feeling the loss of a very dear, cherished loved one!

A song that came to mind today was, “What Will I Leave Behind”. Rena left so many memories behind that will be very cherished and held close at heart. In addition to memories, the family she leaves behind: Linda Langley, daughter; Jessica Langley Brabham (Jason), granddaughter; Nathan Brabham (Cailin), great grandson and Oliver, great great grandson; Kailey Brabham, great granddaughter; David Andrew Langley, grandson; a son, William Dale "Cowboy" Reed (Karen); Austin Reed (Emily), grandson and Fiona, great granddaughter; Ashley Reed (Blake Fisher), granddaughter and Elijah Clay Fisher, great grandson, and Averi Lynn Fisher, great granddaughter, and Baby Fisher (due in November) great grandson; Esias Reed, grandson; Annabeth Reed (Nannie Annie), daughter; Christopher Reed (son of Allen), grandson and great grandson Clay Alexander Scruggs; as well as extended family members and friends.

The family covets your prayers in her absence. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Yes, we would like to be selfish and have kept her here longer, but her life had a plan and a testimony.
