Regina's obituary

Regina Ann Childs, age 74, returned peacefully to the Lord, on Friday, December 27th, Bible in hand. She was born in the small town of Ironton, OH to Lucille (Ford) and Lawrence Collins on August 7th, 1945. In June 1968, after marrying her love John E. Childs Jr., she relocated and remained a long-time churchgoer and resident of Detroit, MI. Let these words celebrate a wife, a mother, a sister, and friend, but most importantly a child of God.
Regina exemplified ACTS 20:35 which states, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” She worked tirelessly and with God’s call to action, sent herself to college. She would retire as a secondary education teacher from Detroit Public Schools. Having taught for over 30 years, she had an unmatched ability to reach her students and communities in the most meaningful ways. She showed her patience in teaching children with special needs and showcased her creative talent in designing entire church plays. It should be known that she desired to be an architect. However, she remained resilient with His strength through the disenfranchisement that was Jim Crow and served to empower His people. She would state, “God said it. I believe it. And that settles it for me.”
Regina was a woman of many talents. Renowned for her cooking skills, she also won a golf tournament without lessons, bowled a 280, and could recall, in order, the US Presidents and State Capitals. A lover of classic theatrical film, watching old Westerns on Turner Classic Movies was to be expected. Dances with Wolves, Gone with the Wind, and Casablanca were some of her favorites. It is said that she could tell you an actor's life as if they were family. Even more, she kept her brilliant mind sharp with word puzzles and attempts to make as many words one can find from one word. Her extensive vocabulary and intelligence were made that much more visible during Scattergories, Scrabble, and Text Twist.

She governed life on three core values: loving God, loving others, and sacrificial giving. She lived life to the fullest through memorizing scripture; uplifting friends and family; and her musically inclined abilities both vocally and instrumentally. As her husband said, “She could really make that piano stand up and talk.” During the holidays, her mind and hands barely still, she praised and always let her creativity flow. She took pride in capturing joy, love, and family feeling when creating entire villages, trimming the tree, and decorating the M&M cookies baked from scratch. These times will not be the same in her absence, but she is now present with the Lord.

Regina is survived by her husband of 51 blessed years, John, two children, Michele and Kim, and three grandchildren, Brittany, Marschelle, and Aiden, as well as her sister, Janice German. She is preceded by her parents and two sisters Adrian Foley and Gwendolyn Lewis. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
