Ray was born in Concord, California in 1927, the ninth child of Leslie and Cecilia McKinnon. Ray had 14 siblings; eight brothers and six sisters. He attended Concord Elementary and graduated from Mt. Diablo High school. After graduating, Ray joined the U.S. Navy where he served with his brother Bill on the USS Santa Fe in the Pacific from 1944 - 1946.

In 1946, Ray married Clara Woods from Port Chicago and they celebrated 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2006. Ray and Clara loved to dance and be surrounded by their 15 children (nine girls and six boys) and their always growing number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Papa Ray (as he was coined by his grandchildren) was known as a baby-whisperer and would often write letters and poems to welcome each new addition.

Ray was well-known and well-loved in the local community, often referred to as “Uncle Ray” by those who knew him through his time as a milkman, or his seven years of semi-pro athletics including football, basketball and baseball and his countless years of coaching middle school sports.

Ray was proud of his accomplishments but he was most proud of his family and he always made sure they knew it.

He is survived by his remaining children Frances Martin, Janet Wise, Jane Malloy, Patrick McKinnon, Carol Lewis, Bridget McKinnon, Julie McKinnon, Jim McKinnon, Susan Dean, Mary Philpot, Andy McKinnon, Karen Erny, their partners and his grandchildren who loved him dearly.

Services will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Concord, CA at 10:30 am on Friday, Feb 1, 2019. 5562 Clayton Road, Concord, CA

Interment will be held at Veterans Cemetary in Dixon, CA (date and time TBA)
