Raymond's obituary

Raymond Glenn Matlock, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, was called to be with the Lord on January 13th, 2023, at age 65, after a 6-year battle with cancer. Raymond was a lifelong Houston resident born on June 10th, 1957, at Herman Hospital to Jessie Odis Matlock and Myrtis Marie Chapman Matlock. Growing up in North Houston, Raymond attended Aldine schools. He graduated from MacArthur High School in 1975, where he played two years of varsity basketball for coach Walt Kaser. In 7th grade, Raymond met the love of his life, Maria “Rosie” Sanchez, at the pencil sharpener, and they soon began dating. They spent over 53 years together, including over 45 years of marriage. After high school, Raymond worked construction and spent one year at North Harris Community College (now Lone Star College), where he played on the inaugural NHCC Hurricanes basketball team. As soon as he was eligible, he applied for the Houston Police Department and graduated from the Academy as part of the 83rd class. He would spend his whole career with HPD, serving in patrol and narcotics, and finally spending over 28 years working with the hostage negotiations team. Raymond retired from HPD in 2011 and was honored for his service to the community as January 6th, 2011, was officially designated “Raymond Matlock Day” in the city of Houston.

Raymond was saved by His Lord Jesus in 1984 and became a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. Eventually, he and his family would become members of Grace Community Bible Church in Tomball, where he served as an Elder. He devoted over 25 years to the church, helping wherever he could, from cutting the grass to setting up all the technology for the services, teaching bible study, and serving as treasurer. In retirement, Raymond devoted his time to serving the church and church family, along with his wife, caring for his dear parents-in-law Felipe and Rosario Sanchez. Additionally, he loved fishing when he could. He picked up a new hobby, woodworking, where he would make beautiful cutting boards and furniture which he loved to give as gifts for friends and family.

Raymond was loved dearly by his extended family and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and devotion to helping others. He was always willing to help others. Although he always stayed busy working around the house or doing projects, he was always willing to devote time to his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Myrtis Matlock, and his parents-in-law, Felipe, and Rosario Sanchez. His grandparents Hoxie Matlock and Ella Wilkins, siblings Virginia Hewett, Jesse Matlock Jr., Robert Earl Matlock, Morris Matlock, and his nephew Philip Medders.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie Matlock, son Jessie Matlock, wife Alejandra, daughter Rosie Salas, and husband, Aaron. His sister Martha Stevens and brother Perry Matlock, sisters-in-law Patricia Medders and husband Richard, Pilar McNear and husband Jeff, and brother-in-law Victor Sanchez. Grandchildren Dominic Salas, Jordan Salas, Pierce Salas, Johanna Matlock, and David Matlock. Many nieces and nephews, including Cindy Reyes, Kathleen Hennings, Jeff Medders, Krystal Higgins, Nicki McNear, Alli McNear, Lindsey McNear, and Gabriel Sanchez. He is also survived by many church family and friends who all loved him dearly and will miss him.

The family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, they consider a gift to Houston Police Retired Officers Association. Donations can be made here.

Raymond’s celebration of life service will take place on Friday, January 27th at 1pm at Founder’s Baptist Church in Spring, 24724 Aldine Westfield Rd, Spring, TX 77373.
