Raymond's obituary

Raymond Thomas “RT” Guthrie, Jr., 86, of Jacksonville, TX praised his way through the gates of Heaven on June 9, 2024.

He was born on January 20, 1938, to Raymond Thomas Guthrie, Sr., and Olive Ruth Thornton Guthrie in Munday, Texas. Above all, Raymond’s life was defined by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Raymond was a graduate of Jacksonville High School, served in the National Guard and then owned and operated A & B Brake and Alignment in Tyler. After surrendering his life to ministry, he attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He went on to pastor at Prairie Creek Baptist Church of Lindale, First Baptist Church of Tenaha and Highland Park Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant and after retiring from the pulpit, was a member of Central Baptist Church of Jacksonville, where he led the Nursing Home Ministry for 10 years.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Jean Alexander, his children, David Guthrie, Pam Guthrie, Greg Guthrie (Laurie), Debbie Kueck (Steve), and his brother, Ruebin Guthrie. Raymond also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren who loved, admired him, and were blessed to call him “Pop-Pop.”

He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ruth Guthrie, brother (Rex Andrew Guthrie) and sister (Ramona Guthrie Nichols).

Pop will be remembered for his unwavering love of serving others and his passion for the Lord. He found joy in teaching the Gospel, serving the community through missions and outreach, and listening to and attending Gospel Quartet concerts. His family will always remember his love for spending time outdoors, feeding his “critters” and rebuilding cars. Pop could build and fix just about anything.

A Memorial will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Central Baptist Church of Jacksonville at 10:30 AM. Visitation will take place at 10:00 AM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Highway 69 Mission (203 N Jackson), Hope Haven of East Texas or Central Baptist Church - Sr Adult Ministry.
