Rasheedah's obituary

RaSheedah El-Amin was born June 2nd, 1969 in Chicago, IL. Her birth name was Recena Dawson. Recena was named in memory of her aunt who passed away at the tender age of two years old. Later, her parents wanted a family name to identify with their religious beliefs and chose the surname of El-Amin.

If you knew RaSheedah you most definitely knew she was a die-hard Prince Fan! With her Prince tattoo and her Prince-themed electric scooter, you couldn’t tell her anything. She was known for her EPIC CD collection. Her love for music was bolstered by her growing up on the Northside of Minneapolis where her small-knit community was about neighborhood/school talent shows and her best friend singing is the famous Excelsior Choir.

RaSheedah graduated from North Community High School in north Minneapolis. She would say she wasn’t a strong academic student in high school. At 35, being inspired by her friend/mentor Dr. Lynn Hassan Jones. RaSheedah would go back to school and graduate Cum Laude from St Catherine’s University’s radiography associate degree program acing her anatomy, physiology, and radiation physics!

Although being immediately hired at Hennepin County Medical Center, a surgery she under went a few  years earlier would impede her from living out her dream of being a RAD Tech and would eventually be the cause of her death. RaSheedah would experience the slow loss of her motor skills over the course of 15 years. This would thrust her into the fight for people with disabilities, access, and accommodations. She testified at the MN legislature and headed several letters writing and calling campaigns to elected officials to provide equitable accommodations. She learned how to navigate state and federal programs to get accommodations to live the highest quality of life. Prior to her passing, she began a project to help walk others with disabilities get through the bureaucracy and red tape as a Navigator. RaSheedah did not let her disabilities limit her abilities!

A Nana 3 times over, her three Grandsons were her greatest loves! Her eldest daughter Taheera gave her 2 grandsons Treyvon and Tayseer. Her youngest daughter Radesha gave her Rafael. These young men brought her such a sense of joy and hope for the future.

To know her as Auntie RaSheedah you knew “Back to School Supplies” was her gift to the children of the El-Amin Family… She would request all the lists for each niece or nephew and would have a party for supply pick up! She made sure her family was taken care of!

Being the oldest child she had the biggest connection with family in Chicago IL. She missed them dearly when her parents moved to MN. The connection with cousins was more like brother/sister than cousins. She made it her business to spend as many summers as she could back home in Chicago IL.

Being part of RaSheedah’s extended family was really no different than if you were blood relatives! MANY, MANY people called her Family, and vice versa she had her lifelong crews from all walks of life! If you were loved by RaSheedah, you were for real loved!!!

Family and very close friends came first and were above all else to Rasheedah, a value she instilled in all those around her. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill.

Rasheedah returned to her Lord on January 5, 2021, and will be forever missed by those who knew and loved her.

RaSheedah leaves to cherish her memory - two daughters Taheera and Lonee Radesha and three grandsons Treyvon, Tayseer, and Rafael. Her mother Arlene and her siblings; 1 sister Kamillah and 4 brothers Makram (Sharon), Ishmael (Tyshaya), Khalid, and Anton. She was preceded in death by her father Charles and leaves countless relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
