Randy's obituary

Randy Waymire, 69, most recently of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on January 4, 2024. He was born on November 12, 1954, in Long Beach, California. Randy, was a beloved son, brother, and father.

Randy served his country with honor and dedication as a member of the United States Airforce during Vietnam. His military associations were an important part of his life, and he took great pride in his service.

After his military career, Randy went on to have a successful career working as a civilian for the Navy at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in California and the Naval Research Laboratory (Washington DC), the first modern research institution of the United States Navy, where he retired from. At the Laboratory, he received the Navy Award of Merit for his expert technical work on experiments LASCO & EIT which were launched on the European Space Agency SOHO Satellite. His contributions to his field were highly valued and appreciated.

In his free time, Randy enjoyed indulging in his hobbies, which included riding motorcycles (since the age of 4), listening to music, and amassing an impressive collection of vinyl albums, audiophile entertainment equipment & military paraphernalia. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending countless hours hiking on Big Bear Mountain, catching rays on the beaches of Southern California or enjoying the spoils of the Chesapeake Bay. These activities brought him joy and allowed him to relax and unwind.

Always ready with a story, Randy LIVED life. His experiences took him around the world. He was a brilliant man that would debate anything with anyone at any time…even if he agreed with you. As the resident Trivial Pursuit champion, he would not hesitate to unleash his wit on the unsuspecting game player. Randy enjoyed celebrating the holidays & special occasions with family and friends. Dents left in the ceilings of his home from the corks of popping champagne bottles always had stories behind them. Graduations, Weddings, Christmases, New Years, Anniversaries… all leaving an indelible mark on him, his family and the house.

Randy will be deeply missed by his loved ones. He is survived by his mother, Jane Waymire, his brother, Mark Waymire and his wife Anne, and his 4 children, Shilo Sudduth, Jimmy Waymire and his wife Keri, Amy Ironsides and her husband Mark, Emilie Waymire, nephews Blaine & Cameron Waymire and his grandchildren Jack, William, John, Adam, Lily & Noah. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward (Buzz) Waymire and his beloved husky, Misha.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Randy's memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or the Humane Society of Washington County. What these organizations do held a special place in his heart, and donations will help continue their important work.

A celebration of life for Randy will be held with friends and family in the near future.
