Randal's obituary

We profoundly mourn the loss of Randal "Randy" Brown, a force of nature, an adventurer, a comedian, an advocate, a protective “papa bear”, an amazing storyteller, and husband to his “sweet pea”, Peggy, for 56 years. Always one to do things his own way, Randy slipped out while no one was looking on Saturday morning, March 9th, for his next wild ride.

Born on September 8, 1947, to Delbert and Marian (Cook) Brown, Randal was the oldest of 5 children, growing up in Lincoln and North Platte, Nebraska. From the beginning, Randal was a protective older brother who loved entertaining his younger siblings, Robert, Richard, Paula (Weimar), and Susan (Hiatt) with imaginative stories and humor. As a young man, he thrilled in pulling pranks and pushing the boundaries of North Platte, NE. Reminiscing about all the mischief he got into with his siblings and his childhood friends always brought a smile to his face.

Randy’s disarming humor, sharp wit, and irresistible charm swept his high school sweetheart, Peggy (Thompson) off her feet, and it didn’t take long before they were ready to embark on their 58-year odyssey together. From the heartbreaking loss of their first son, Patrick, to Randy joining the Army Signal Corps and serving in Vietnam 1968-1969, Randy and Peg faced life-changing hardship early in their marriage. Upon returning from the Vietnam War, Randy attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he received his Teaching Degree. Eager to explore the world, Randy and Peggy moved to Australia for two years, where they welcomed their first daughter, Adrienne, in 1975. After returning to the United States, Randy attended Law School at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, opening his first law office in 1980. In 1981, Randy and Peggy welcomed their second daughter, Alyson. Never one to shy away from adventure, Randy took a job in Seattle, Washington and moved his family to the Pacific Northwest in 1995. Throughout Randy’s 37-year career as an attorney, he fought for justice, setting precedent in Civil Rights Disability Law, Special Education Law, and Native American Law, leaving a lasting impact.

Randal’s love for his family was steadfast, and he let them know he would ALWAYS love them, and ALWAYS be with them. He was greeted in the next realm by his son Patrick, his mother and father, his brother Robert, and his father- and mother-in-law, John & Dorothy Thompson. He is sorely missed by his wife Peggy of Covington, WA, his two daughters, Adrienne Bourne and her husband Floyd, of Friday Harbor, WA, and Alyson Brown and her husband Greg Sheldon, of Olympia, WA; and his five grandchildren Fionnoula, Satchel & Atticus Bourne, and Frances & Lincoln Sheldon. Randy and his family wish to express their deeply heartfelt gratitude to the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting, Washington, where he was graciously cared for by nurses, doctors, and staff, and where he bonded with his fellow Veterans.
