Mona's obituary
Ramona "Mona" Link-Thomas, 80, of Kailua, HI, passed away on May 20, 2022, after complications due to a recent surgery.
Mona was born on August 5, 1941, to Mildred and John Link in Dubuque, Iowa. Mona grew up in Iowa, Japan, and Hawaii, and graduated from Kailua High School in 1959. She married Marc Pass in June of 1959, moved back to Iowa and went on to have three children, Joni, Kevin, and Steven. She lived in Iowa for the next 20 years, and after all of her children were off to find their own lives, she chose to return to Hawaii, a place she has called home for the last 40 years. In May of 2006, she married her current husband, Charles Thomas. They initially lived in Kailua for a brief time, moved to Hilo for ten years, and then returned to Kailua in 2016.
Mona loved Hawaii! She spoke with great passion about the people, culture, food and music. She would often drive to the beach just to stare at the ocean and soak up the beauty. Her love for the islands influenced her creativity in her designs. Mona loved style, fashion, and interior design. She was a passionate designer and seamstress. She used her artistic talents to establish Kahala Creations and Mahalo Mona, both successful wholesale businesses that manufactured Hawaiian fabric gift items. She also opened two Kailua retail stores, a ladies' boutique called Mahalo Mona, and a children's store called Keli Loves Malia. When she wasn’t busy running her businesses, she had many other passions such as interior design and remodeling, having lunch with close friends, finding wonderful Hawaiian art and custom jewelry pieces. She loved to accessorize! Mona was very active in her community and local civic events.
Mona is survived by her husband Charles Thomas, children Joni Wolpert (Bob), Kevin Pass (Claudia), and Steve Pass (Florentina), her sister Candace Manger (Al), grandchildren Keli Butler, Malia Butler, Elizabeth Patterson, Malena Medan-Pass, Elena Pass, and Marcus Pass, and great grandchildren Eloise Huxford and Riley Pass. She was predeceased by her sister Beverly Henss.
The family would like to send our sincere thank you to the ICU doctors, nurses and staff at Adventist Health Castle in Kailua, for theirs efforts, care and compassion.
