Phyllis's obituary

Phyllis V. Elgin, formerly of Binghamton, NY, passed away peacefully in Safety Harbor, FL. on Sunday August 28th, 2022. She was 91. She was born to Glen and Martha Vought on Sept. 26th,1930, in Sayre, Pa., and the family relocated to Unadilla, NY, soon after, where she spent her formative years. She graduated High School in Unadilla in 1948. After briefly attending Elmira College, Phyllis transitioned to a Nursing Career. She attended Crouse Irving Hospital, School of Nursing, in Syracuse, NY, from 1949 to 1952, ultimately graduating from a 3 year program to become a Registered Nurse. After her beloved husband, George T Elgin, Jr., also of Binghamton, passed away from Cancer in 1968, Phyllis eventually returned to work, and successfully worked her way up the ladder through various Nursing Positions, to ultimately become a Director of Nursing. That is, at Private, County and Federal Facilities in both New York State and in Florida. While working full time, in New York State, she also completed 100 Hours toward Long Term Care Nurse Administrator status in New York, through an external program with Cazenovia College in 1983. She also completed 100 additional credit hours, through St. Joseph’s College in Maine, with a 3.86 GPA, finishing in 1986. She finished just shy of a BSN-Nursing Degree. Despite these many achievements, Phyllis’s greatest pride and joy, which she expressed often, was that of her three sons, by whom she is survived and who she raised as a widow starting at age 38. Her three sons, oldest to youngest, are Thomas, George and Philip. She is also survived by a Granddaughter, Lauren Elgin, a Sister-in-law, Virginia Elgin, of Bethesda, Md., a Cousin Richard G. Adams of Middlefield, CT. as well as various nieces and nephews. Besides a love of music, singing and attending Church, Phyllis also loved to read. Phyllis was loved by all and will be deeply missed, most especially by her children. The family will have a private gathering in Florida. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may make a donation in her memory, to the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church of Safety Harbor, FL (https://www.holyspirit-Florid…) or to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (https://www.curealz.org)
