Phulmat's obituary
Phulmat was born on June 13, 1926, to Mahatoo and Sheocoar Kachan in Bush Lot, Berbice, Guyana. In 1945, she married Charles (Nares) Cheekoorie, and went on to have four children, Sita, Vino, Jai and Shero.
Throughout her life, Phulmat worked tirelessly to maintain a household with strong family values and routines. In her earlier years, she ran four different stores specializing in groceries, hardware, clothing, and liquor. During her lunch hour, she would close the store, so she could join her husband in various farming tasks. She also made time to cook complete and hearty meals for her family. Among these many things that she did on a daily basis, she was also a successful and professional seamstress. She made many outfits for her children, as well as several other family members. She was a dedicated mother and wife, both in Guyana, and throughout her lifetime in Canada. At 94 years of age, her family tree extends to ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren as well. She was very proud of her growing family and their professional successes.
Most recently, when she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in her garden pruning her favourite flowers. We will miss her greatly.
Phulmat was predeceased by her husband, Charles (Nares) Cheekoorie, her siblings, Kaysoram Ramsarran, Jasodra Gangadin, Dr. Ramkarran Kachan, Dr. Preetoodial Kachan, and Lalmanie Budhram. She is survived by her sisters, Dhanmat Singh and Jasmat Singh. As well her children, Sita Shewnarain, Vino Chickrie, Jairam Chiekrie, and Shero Persaud.
