Phoebe's obituary
Ms. Phoebe Ann Jenkins was born September 18, 1941 in McClellanville, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Shepherd “Shep” and Rev. Elouise “Nancy” Jenkins. God gently called Phoebe Ann to his eternal resting place on April 12, 2023.
Phoebe was educated in the public schools of Charleston County. She graduated from Burke High School in 1959 and Benedict College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies. She continued her love for education by becoming a teacher at the Immaculate Conception School (ICS) in Charleston then various other schools in the Lowcountry while furthering her studies at South Carolina State College. After the birth of her son, Phoebe switched careers to become a paralegal working with the Neighborhood Legal Assistance Program, Inc. for over 25 years supporting the Charleston and Walterboro, SC offices until her retirement.
Raised in a multi-generational African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church family, Phoebe was a lifelong member at Bethel AME Church, McClellanville, SC and an affiliate member at Ebenezer AME Church during several periods throughout her life when she resided in Charleston, SC.
Phoebe was passionate about serving her community any way she could. After her school day at ICS, she supported the initial Citadel Black Society community outreach in partnership with Father Grant on the east side of Charleston as a tutor for underserved children of different ages 3 days a week for several years. She extended her community service through the Neighborhood Legal Assistance Program, Inc. in collaboration with several local church ministries. Phoebe was a tremendous resource in the community for the senior residents seeking benefits through social security and many other programs that benefited the elderly.
As one of fourteen children, Phoebe financially and emotionally supported all of her younger siblings and cousins in their pursuit of personal, educational, and professional goals. She was a guardian angel for most of her nieces and nephews, who affectionately knew her as “Auntie Ann”. They were all her children until Myron arrived.
Phoebe was a dedicated friend with several of her friendships lasting over decades. She served as a mentor and confidant to many of her closest friends and they often came to her for advice and support. You seldom saw her without a phone in her hand talking to a family member, friends or co-workers. Her compassion for others was enormous and she would give her last to support anyone.
Phoebe was a woman deeply attached to her faith, family and friends. She had a soft side that would light up a room with her laughter and personality, but would fiercely protect her family, friends and principles and values she believed in when needed.
Phoebe Ann leaves to cherish her memories a beloved and devoted son, Myron Shepherd Jenkins; siblings Florence J. Waring, Donald A. Jenkins, Sr. (Annie Pearl), Dorothy L. Brown (Paul), Judge Robert N. Jenkins, Sr. (Margaret), Robert S. Jenkins (Linda) and Evangelist Sandra J. Capers (Rev. Curtis); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Mr. Shepherd Jenkins and Rev. Elouise Nancy Jenkins; and siblings: Rufus Jenkins, Ernest Jenkins, Emma J. Anderson, Bertha Mae Jenkins, Viola J. Caldwell, Shepherd Jenkins, Jr. and Daniel E. Jenkins.
