Celebrating the Life of Phillip Douglas Smith
A Legacy of Generosity, Leadership, and Love
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we write about the passing of Phillip Douglas Smith. He passed May 25th, 2025 at his home in Magnolia, Texas, surrounded by his daughter, family, and favorite dog Missy.
Phillip Douglas Smith – also known as Doug or Dougie - lived a life full of purpose, laughter, and dedication to those he loved. Doug was born March 9, 1963, as the youngest of five boys to Catherine “Tiny” and Marion “Smitty” Smith in Humble, Texas. Doug graduated from Humble High School and then Sam Houston State with a degree in business in 1987. Doug met the love of his life, Andrea, while in college and the pair got married on September 9th, 1989. They had their only daughter, Catherine (Katie), on March 18th, 1992.
Doug approached every role in his life with tremendous enthusiasm and passion—be it as a mentor, a coach, a husband, a father, or a friend. From the beginning, Doug showed a natural ability to connect with people, always finding ways to bring people together and make them laugh. His life was marked by the deep friendships he made, the family whose lives he enriched, and the countless other lives he touched at every turn.
In his professional life, Doug was a diligent and fun-loving boss who genuinely cared for those he worked with. He was a natural-born leader who took every opportunity to mentor and guide his employees in both their career and personal development. When Doug took the step to become a small-business owner, he carried those values with him to create a business that had a real impact on his community.
Phillip’s impact on his community transcended his business endeavors. He was a cherished coach and mentor, often dedicating his time to help young athletes hone their skills and learn the values of teamwork and perseverance. His coaching extended beyond sports; he taught life lessons that shaped character and instilled confidence in countless individuals.
To neighbors and friends, Doug was always ready to lend a helping hand. No task was too small, too big, or too challenging for him if it meant making someone’s day better. Whether helping a neighbor, throwing in some manual labor, or simply sharing his wisdom, Doug’s generosity was a beacon of how to take care of those around us and an example we can all aspire to.
Above all, Doug was the ultimate example of a family man – he was unwavering in his dedication and care for his wife and his love and support for his daughter. His family was the cornerstone of his life, his greatest pride and the source of his strength and joy. There’s no way to adequately capture what his family meant to him, but it was evident to everyone around that every action and thought was made with them in mind. From backyard coaching sessions for soccer, basketball, track, or pretty much any sport imaginable to piling the whole family into the Airstream to go to Garner State Park – Doug and his family lived a life full of fun, joy, and laughter and shared that with everyone in their lives.
Those of us lucky enough to call Doug a friend know that he always made you feel accepted and welcome. He truly lived the adage that a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet. All of the laughs and gatherings, late nights at the lake house, hunting and fishing trips, and much more have left countless of us with memories that will be cherished and recollected for a lifetime.
Phillip Douglas Smith leaves behind a legacy of generosity, leadership, and love—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though his loss is felt deeply, the joyful memories of his life will forever be a source of comfort and celebration for those who carry his spirit in their hearts.
Remember - Have fun. Don’t get hurt.
