Jim's obituary

Philip James Windey passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old and lived a full, vibrant, and love-filled life.

At a young age, Jim worked alongside his father in a bakery and later graduated from Dunwoody Institute. He loved to joke that he chose a career that would always keep him “in the dough.” That sense of humor stayed with him throughout his life—he was always the jokester, always ready with a story, and always finding a way to make people smile.

He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1962 aboard the USS Salem as a Yeoman Third Class (YN3), serving as the captain’s right-hand man. That sense of discipline and pride carried into everything he did.

Jim met his wife, Judy, in 1965 while floating down the Apple River in Wisconsin, and together they built an incredible life—sharing 60 years, 6 months, and 6 days of marriage. Their story is one of deep love, partnership, and commitment.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and his life was centered around family, connection, and shared experiences.

Jim loved the outdoors—skiing, boating, and lake life. From the St. Croix River to Balsam Lake, to Florida, and finally Colorado, he found joy in the simple things: sunshine, water, laughter, and time spent with those he loved.

His grandsons were a source of immense pride and joy. He loved watching Kole play hockey and never missed a chance to talk about it. He was equally proud of Kiefer, who plans to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps by joining the Navy in 2027—a legacy that meant the world to him.

In his final days, something truly special unfolded. A beloved 19-year-old cat, Bo, stayed faithfully by his side—rarely leaving, even during a room filled with family and friends. In his final moments, Bo stood at the center of the bed, eyes fixed on Jim.

Those present felt a profound and unexplainable sense of presence in the room—something deeply peaceful and powerful. There is comfort in believing that Jim was not alone in those moments, and that he was gently guided on his final journey.

That was Jim. Someone worth staying for.

He will be laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado with full military honors. Celebrations of his life will be held in both Colorado and Minnesota this summer.

His stories, his humor, and his love will live on in all who knew and loved him.
