Philip's obituary
Philip was born on July 25, 1948 in Batavia, New York. After graduating from Batavia High School in 1966, he continued his educational pursuits by earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Alfred State College, Alfred, New York, his Master's degree in Education, as well as coursework for his Doctorate from Buffalo State University.
After graduating from Alfred State he started his teaching career and taught Distributive Education at BOCES, East Aurora, New York. He was active in many student clubs and served on several educational committees. He often assumed the role of assistant principal during his tenure. He taught until the late 1980s when he made the decision to enter the field of insurance. Philip was the owner of Weast Insurance in Salamanca, New York since 1991. He also taught courses for the New York state insurance licensing board. He also served as President of the Seneca/Salamanca Chamber of Commerce and was a volunteer fire fighter for the Town of West Valley, New York.
Philip is predeceased by his parents, Philip Charles and Evelyn (Greening) Moyer, as well as stepson, Lieutenant Colonel James W. Doepp, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Susan Knight, of Celebration, Florida; daughters, Lauren Patricia Moyer, of Celebration, Florida and Casey Rose Moyer, of Haines City, Florida; stepson, Benjamin Knight Ryder, of Celebration, Florida; sisters, Helen I. Mixon, of Alabama and Barbara Eggleston, of North Carolina.
Philip traveled quite a bit and embarked on many trips to catch up with his stepson who served in the United States Army overseas. The trips brought Phil and his family to the UK, Europe and Japan for visits. Philip also loved all things Disney, and he would often be found circumnavigating a park on the weekends at Walt Disney World. He visited Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris, as well as sailing on many memorable Disney cruises, often sharing the joy with family members and friends.
He also loved the camaraderie of sports, particularly the game of golf, although he was often heard uttering, "I have an insatiable love for the game but no discernible talent." A memorable bucket-list moment was playing a round of golf at Pebble Beach a few years ago. He loved his sports teams. He was a Boston Red Sox fan living in Yankee territory and a very proud Buffalo Bills season ticket holder for over three decades. He hardly missed a home game in his day and was thrilled when he passed his pigskin passion down to his two daughters, who were often found sitting by his side no matter what the weather.
Affectionately known as "Papi" to many, he worked and played vigorously, loved his family and true friends, held his colleagues in the highest regard and was crazy about his beloved dogs, all feeling a profound loss of this special man. He was known for his selfless generosity and often gave of his time and donated to events in Salamanca and surrounding towns, including sponsoring the Fireball Run, performing as Master of Ceremonies and judging the Falling Leaves Festival pageant, supporting the local Booster Club, as well as many donations to Salamanca High School and the city's many civic organizations, sports teams and animal rescue organizations in both New York and Central Florida.
Those who knew and loved Phil can attest to his passion for life, his spirit, kindness and generosity to so many. In his presence one always got a sense that life was good, and everything in the Universe was going to be okay. He was a true believer in his faith which brought a sense of calm to his being and an unwavering patriot who loved his country. In keeping with his conviction of helping others, donations would be welcomed to a charity of his choice: GarySiniseFoundation.org, FloridaLittleDogRescue.com or American Diabetes Foundation (diabetes.org)
Services for family and friends will be held at Celebration Community Presbyterian Church, 511 Celebration Avenue, Celebration on Sunday, January 17th at 1:30 PM. At Phil's posthumous insistence, all are invited to gather at the conclusion of the service at The Windmill Restaurant, Celebration Golf Club, 701 Golfpark Drive, Celebration.
"Enjoy yourself; it's later than you think." Guy Lombardo
