Philip's obituary

Philip "Phil, Dickie" McCullough departed this life on August 17, 2023. Born on October 4, 1937, Philip was a man known by many names, but preferred to be referred by Philip. He was a beacon of kindness, warmth, love and compassion. Despite being private about his feelings and childhood, Philip projected a generous and endearing personality that left an indelible impact on everyone he encountered. Philip was a firm believer in treating everyone with kindness and compassion, without judgement. He could light up a room with his goofy charm and warmth, and he had a knack for giving the most comforting hugs.

Philip has left behind his cherished partner, Robert McLaughlin, and his beloved ex-wife, Christine (Kohanski) McCullough. He is also survived by his daughters, Kathleen Zaro and Deborah Josifko. He was predeceased by his daughter, Michele Fleming, and his ex-wife, Joanne (Walls) McCullough.

Philip dedicated his time and efforts as a volunteer at the Sierra Club Foundation. He had a deep-rooted passion for service, with particular interest in causes like the Sierra Club of Solano County and AIDS support groups in Valejo. His choice of recreational activities - from fishing, camping, walking his dog, and abalone diving, to playing the organ, listening to music, cycling, and being near the ocean - reflected his love for life and nature. Philip was also an avid player of Backgammon and Cribbage.

A lover of Diet Pepsi and iced tea, Philip also held a special place in his heart for San Francisco 49ers football and Oakland A’s baseball. His world was colored in hues of blue and burgundy, which were his favorite colors.

In death as in life, Philip leaves a legacy of kindness and generosity that will continue to inspire everyone who knew him. Philip's light will shine on in the smiles and hearts of those he touched with his unique spirit. He will always be remembered as a caring soul who lived by his values, believed in the goodness of people, and made the world a better place with his presence.
