Philip's obituary
Philip Earl Gibson, 60, of Coralville Iowa, passed away on April 14, 2023, surrounded by his family. Phil was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 18, 1962. He graduated Ottumwa High School in 1984. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and spent two years studying computer science at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Phil was a true original. Creative, thoughtful, and always ready for a good discussion. He will be missed and remembered by the many lives he touched. Philip, everyone you left in this world is sad that you are gone, but we are grateful that you are no longer suffering. We will always love and miss you, until we can meet again.
Phil was a jack-of-all-trades. He worked notably as a software engineer for Seitech, a General Manager for U-Haul, a manager at JCPennys, and a maintenance worker for Lost Creek Ranch in Wyoming. He enjoyed telling and writing stories. Phil authored a science-fiction novel. Phil was a talented musician and sound engineer. He played drums for several area bands and wrote and recorded original music throughout his entire life. He volunteered as a sound engineer and recorded music for orchestras in both Iowa and Illinois. He enjoyed painting naturescapes, sculpting and woodworking. Phil loved the outdoors and gardening. When his kids were younger he would garden with them and they would sell produce at various Farmers Markets around Eastern Iowa.
Phil is survived by his father Jerry Gibson, his brother and sister-in-law Matt & Andria Gibson, his daughter and son-in-law Ashley & Keegan Doremus, his two sons Kurtis Gibson and Adam Gibson, six grandchildren and two nieces.
Phil was preceded in death by his mother Diane Gibson and his brother David Gibson.
The family is holding a small funeral service at Coralville United Methodist Church 11:30 AM Friday April 21st. Pastor Leigh Brown will be officiating the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Phil’s favorite charity; The Arbor Day Foundation and also Care Initiatives Hospice of Cedar Rapids. A special Thank You goes out to the entire staff of Care Initiatives Hospice who were a blessing for the entire family and the care they gave Phil during the heartbreaking final weeks of Phil’s amazing life.
