My deepest condolences to Wilma and Amy, Pete, and all of Phil's family, some of the sweetest folks you'll ever meet. I had the great pleasure of having a stint in Phil's band The Westernaires from the mid 90's to sometime in mid 2000's...not sure of the exact dates, but I am very sure of the great times we had making music together, and driving up from Massachusetts to play music every Thursday evening during that run. We laughed a lot, played a lot and I learned a WHOLE lot. Once we traveled to Maine to play in a traditional country music festival where Kitty Wells was the headliner and I recall being so nervous to perform with her greatness there, the Queen of Country Music ya know (!) that my mouth dried up so much my lips were stickin' to my gums and oh boy was it ever something! Another time we were playing at the Claremont Opera House and during the sound check there was a huge delay with the PA system, and the sound crew were running all over trying to figure out the flaw, and Phil uttered these brilliant words to me, letting me know HE knew what the problem was, he said - "It's something to do with technology"....which just about doubled me over in fits of laughter, and from that point on whenever there was something amiss, we'd look at each other say, "it's something to do with technology"! Probably one of those stories where you'd have to have been there to get the full effect, but it was a goodun'!

Here's a video link to one of our performances in July of 1997 where we were playing at a country and bluegrass festival in Ft Ann, NY.

I enjoyed the music and friendship I shared with Phil for thirty years. One of his qualities, which was so overwhelming and endearing, was the generosity he showed towards me, as a complete novice on steel guitar when I met him. He gave me the opportunity to "learn on the job", and was always complementary and encouraging. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity he provided me, and all the moments he and I shared.
Our hearts are with you Wilma, Amy, Pete, and all the family on both sides. Fletcher and Vorce we send our deepest sympathy . Phil was a wonderful man, very gifted since a young man. Remember all the picking and grinning times over the years. Wilma and I were class mates, so many memories. So thankful the Lord has giving us the gift of Memories, and such sweet and special friendships. Such a Blessing. Thank you Amy for keeping us posted, so we would know how to pray for your sweet parents. We Love you all and will continue to pray for the Lord to be extra close, during this difficult time.
God Bless You all, We love you

Wilma and Amy,
So sorry to hear about Phil. Although I enjoyed the fairs and concerts where I joined the Westernaires, I think my fondest memories will be the Sunday afternoon rehearsals in Westmoreland followed by a delicious supper and conversation. I think Phil and I were on the same page with our music.
My sincerest sympathy to Wilma, Amy, family & friends. I share your loss. His absence has certainly left a void.
I only knew Phil for about 30 years, so I felt that I was still on probation, but musical associates share an unspoken closeness which became more apparent near the end. I always felt that our mothers had taken us off the bottle, and put us on the guitar. Phil & I shared that addiction. We spent many hours together in that regard.
Although Phil wasn't best known for his humor, once when we were on stage at a playhouse, he announced that back home, folks would say that a place like that would hold a lot of hay! Good laugh.
I'll miss him. A portion of history has concluded, but we lived it with him; for that I'm grateful.
Wilma, Amy, you know where to find me. ..

So sorry for your loss. Pete always spoke well of Phil and enjoyed "filling
in" on bass with the band when needed. It seems to me that Pete played with them at the Pickle Festival...an unusual name. Prayers....
We are so very sorry for your loss. I loved Uncle Phil from the moment I met him. He was so good to me. He will be missed.
Sending hugs to you all.

Wilma and I have been friends forever. I met Philip when he and Wilma married. He was an impeccable person, and musician. Larry and I love the both of them. He played a heck of a banjo. I am lucky enough to have tapes and a picture of the Westerniers.. Amy you and your mom have my deepest condolences. Your dad was a wonderful guy. Take care of your in mom.
Phil was a truly nice man who knew more about country music history than anyone I knew. I was truly honored to be a Westernaire on several occasions. He will be missed by his friends.
