Peter's obituary
Peter Probst, a world-renowned counter-terrorism expert for the U.S. government, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 30, 2022, in Fair Oaks Hospital. He will be laid to rest next to his parents, Helen and Leonard Probst, in Hawthorne, New York on Wednesday, July 6th, in a small ceremony with close family.
Peter was a proud native of New York City where he later attended Columbia College and Columbia University earning a BA in history and an MA in anthropology and archaeology. He worked as an archeologist before joining the
the Central Intelligence Agency where he served for 20 years. His primary professional focus was terrorism, insurgency and political warfare. Later in his career, he worked extensively in intelligence analysis and spent 10 years with the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Service from which he retired with a reserve rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is an often-cited expert on anti-terrorism and published extensively on the topic including his prominent work “Terror 2000.”
Notwithstanding his immense professional success, Peter’s proudest accomplishment was being a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Lisa Orlow, stepdaughters, Jordan and Madison Orlow, and two children, Ilana Simhon and Aaron Probst. He greatly enjoyed regaling his family with stories of his numerous adventures traveling around the world and maintained an impressive collection of photography and artifacts. He loved animals, including his dogs, Scooter and Lola, and enjoyed bird watching.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Peter’s honor.
